Two words that Debbie Adams uses to describe herself is “workaholic and reluctant entrepreneur”. Losing her career as a solider because of vision loss was devastating and in spite of graduating from university with distinction at age 46, employers were still not willing to employ her. So, she did the one thing she had control over – she hired herself. Debbie is not only the owner of PeopleCan Training in Lower Sackville, she also teaches other entrepreneurs to learn the lessons that she had to learn the hard way. She helps small businesses become profitable sooner and profitable again with her practical lessons that she earned at the school of hard knocks. She loves to talk about the elephant in the room – unconscious bias against making money. Debbie may live with disabilities but she doesn’t let that slow her down. In 2016, she was chosen as Entrepreneur of the Year. She is also a 3 time published author. Debbie travels the country speaking to people about tough topics like money, change and entrepreneurship. When she isn’t working, she enjoys connecting with her roots in the great outdoors. She is a Newfoundlander at heart but lives in Nova Scotia with her daughter Alyssa.

Hattie was born in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, and raised in Lower Selma on the Fundy Shore. The mother of nine children, this former school teacher and reporter for the Halifax Chronicle Herald, both in Dartmouth and Truro and as a columnist for the Truro News. Her journalism experience has taken her to numerous Nova Scotia villages where—although not part of her assignment—she meticulously copied down the yarns and fables that local elders were eager to recount. Hattie was determined this local folklore should not go forgotten as generations passed. Books are available direct from the author. They are also sold at MacQuarrie’s (Truro), Anthony’s Freshmart (Kennetcook), Glooscap Trading Post, Glooscap Heritage Centre (Truro), Alderberry Village (Inglis St., Truro) and Shoppers Drug Mart (Truro). Readers will also find them a several local libraries. |

Join us as we show our Pride in the parade on Saturday, July 13. We will once again be joining the Dal AC crew on their float (i.e. hay trailer and tractor!) as we party through the streets of Truro. The parade starts at 2:00pm and runs for about an hour, starting at the Colchester Legion Stadium parking lot, and ending at Civic Square. If you plan to participate on the float or walking beside it, please register now so we know numbers. You will have to choose to walk or ride, it is too dangerous to get on and off while the parade is in motion. Those people walking may hand out candy; it is not to be thrown from the float. You must be on the float and ready to go by 1:00pm that Saturday. For more information on the parade, please see their Facebook event, https://www.facebook.com/events/426759134574098/. I've got my rainbow tutu fluffed up and ready to go. Hope to see you there! |
