Opening/Chair: Judy Nicholson chaired today's meeting. She asked Lori to lead us in the signing of O'Canada. This was followed by a moment of personal reflection.
Visitors/Guests:
Al Cooze joined us as a visitor for the last time today.
Jim Retson from the Rotary Club of Kenora joined us.
Susan Pike and Whitney MacLean, a former Rotaract participant, from the NSCC Foundation also joined us.
Speaker: Our Speaker today wasWarren Meek. Warren shared his experience as a pharmacist and project lead on the Ukerewe Medical Mission on Ukerewe Island, Tanzania with Canada Africa Community Health Alliance (CACHA).
The Project is designed to improve quality of services, capture health statistics easier, and to enhance safety. The goal is to develop and use a mobile Electronic Medical Record (EMR) System off grid for better quality care and outcomes, safety, efficiency and volunteer engagement.
In addition to providing free medicines, the project offers free dental, eye and medical assessments. Volunteers provides patient education and share their skills with their Tanzanian partners.
In the early stages of the project the group was seeing roughly 500 people a day.
They use whatever space is available when traveling to different villages to offer medical care clinics. It may be a health centre, school house or dispensary.
CACHA has been collaborating with NSCC Truro Campus staff and students to develop a software to bring the EMR system to life. Warren shared the struggles of technology barriers in the area and highlighted some of the progress they've made by purchasing two raspberry pi's and a generator. Moving forward CACHA wants to ensure they have the most reliable off the grid server and LAN set up to deliver their EMR system.
CACHA's future goals include sharing information with patients electronically, patient education tools, clinical decision support tools and more.
We were happy to have Warren share his experience and the amazing work he is doing with CACHA and more specifically on the Ukerewe Medical Mission.
Yearbook Committee Update- Lech and Matt provided the Club with an update on the progress for the 2019 Yearbook.
An email was sent out to all past yearbook clients, and 70 have responded that they will be purchasing an ad space once again.
The electronic tool that's been created to streamline the entire process from solicitation to invoices, has been greatly improved and will make things much easier this year.
Matt will be sending out an email to all members with the web address, login information and any other special details regarding previously assigned businesses. ex. outstanding invoices.
They provided all members at today's meeting with a "Yearbook Solicitation Checklist". If you missed today's meeting and would like a copy, please email Matt.
President's Report:
The Club received an invitation to Camp Tidnish's Open House happening on Sunday, July 15th from 2:00 P.M. - 5:30 P.M. It's important that our club be present at this event.
President Alana also recently attended the District Strategic Planning Meeting this past weekend and will certainly have her hands full in her new role as Public Image Chair. There's lots of exciting things happening in the district, looking onward to the future months.
President Alana reminded everyone of the AGM happening next Monday, June 25th following our regular scheduled meeting. She also reminded everyone that there would be no meeting on July 2 due to the Canada Day holiday. July 9th would be the next meeting which will be held at the Truro Golf Club. Arrive anytime around 5-5:30 P.M.
Alana invited visiting Rotarian Jim Retson up to speak. Jim shared his experience as a Rotarian in Kenora Ontario.
President Alana was then joined by Ken MacLean and Al Cooze for Al's induction.
Happy Mug: There were a number of happy Rotarians today.
Kevin is happy to be headed to NFLD for the summer. He will continue working on the Speaker Series, which Andrea Jackson has agreed to come aboard with.
Ken was happy to announce that "once a Rotarian, always a Rotarian." Carl Flemming, a past member called him looking for assistance from his "Rotary family" as his son will be moving to Truro and is looking for a furnished apartment.
Brian and Sharon shared the mic to express their excitement to be headed to Toronto with other Rotarians for the Rotary International Convention.
50/50: Chester was the lucky ticket holder and this time he picked up the joker! He wins $144.50. Congrats Chester!
We are pleased to welcome Al Cooze as the Club's newest Rotarian. Al was recruited by Ken MacLean, who had a hunch in church one Sunday, turned around and saw Al and simply asked, "would you like to join Rotary", to which Al simply replied, "yes".
Al recently moved to Truro from NFLD, with his wife. He enjoys travel, golf, and music. We've been told he'll play any brass instrument he can get his hands on! We are hoping Al will play some Christmas Carols on the piano at our Christmas Party.
Al has already helped with service work. He has been active with other service groups such as Kinsman and the Alzheimer's Society. Before he retired, he was the General Manager for Zellars.
Al is excited to be a part of our Club and get involved in the community and we are excited to have him.
Jim Retson from the Rotary Club of Kenora joined us for our June 18th meeting. He shared with us that his club has about 70 members, 35% - 40% of which are women. He went on to share that his club's last three presidents were also female.
The Rotary Club of Kenora contributes $10,000 annually to Shelterbox https://www.shelterboxcanada.org/ as well as $10,000 annually towards building new schools in Guatemala.
The Rotary Club of Kenora is hopeful to have a First Nations Rotary Club North of Kenora in the coming months.
Alana and Jim exchanged club banners.
It is always interesting to have visiting Rotarians. It gives us the opportunity to hear first hand what other clubs are doing. Thanks for joining us Jim!
