John Kelderman
Community Service Award

Our “Community Service Citation” recognizes non-Rotarians who have contributed to our community by volunteering and also by donating to local organizations.  Established by our Club in 2006, it is provided annually to a deserving person who has excelled in donating time and money.

John moved to the Truro area in 1985 and owned the local Kwik Kopi franchise for 26 years, retiring in 2012.

In those 33 years John has served in many volunteer capacities with numerous local organizations.  Those organizations include: Truro Minor Hockey, Truro Development Corporation, West Colchester Minor Hockey, NS Teachers College/Community College Steering Committee, Colchester Park Development Society, Truro & Colchester Chamber of Commerce, Nova Scotia Chamber of Commerce, Atlantic Provinces Chamber of Commerce, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Kane’s Kitchen, Downtown Truro Partnerships, Truro Investment Co-operative, Marigold Cultural Center Co-operative,  Immaculate Conception Church’s humanitarian trip to Guatemala, and The Rath Eastlink Community Center.  In many of these 14 community groups, John was an active volunteer, a mentor, a sponsor, a board member on 12, and was the Chair for 6 of these local organizations, including Chair of the RECC.  Over the 32 years residency in our Truro area, a rough calculation is that he has volunteered over 60 years of service to our community, and as you have heard, many in important and senior positions.

John has 3 adult children and 4 grandchildren.  Those grandchildren refer to him as “Opa”.  John and Dianne live in East Mountain with “Bosun” a black Newfoundland dog.

The Rotary Club of Truro is honoured to have John join a distinguished list of outstanding community volunteers that have received this recognition.

Our Rotary Club of Truro’s recipient to receive our 2018 Community Service Award is John Kelderman.
