Opening/Chair: Les Mosher was the chair for the day. He asked President Alana to lead the group in the singing of O Canada. This was followed by the moment of personal reflection.
Visitors/Guests: Josh MacGrath, GM of Truro Toyota was the guest of Richard Bowness.
Chelsea Carr Kinnear, a 4th year chiropractic student from Fall River was the guest of Joanna Christianson.
Speaker: The Speaker for the day was Rotarian Lech Krywonos, Principal of the NSCC Truro Campus. Born in Poland, raised in Australia, Lech lives in Valley with his wife Tari, two daughters, two cats and a black lab.
Lech spoke about the NSCC and it evolution from a set of independent vocational training schools into the integrated post secondary institution it now is.
The Truro Campus graduates about 200 students per year and statistics show that 93% come from the area and over 92% stay to work in the community. The average age of an NSCC student is 25 and a very high percentage come to the college with some previous post secondary experience. Because they tend to be older, the majority of these student also have to balance more life commitments such as work and family than their younger university student counterparts do. Money is always tight and is often a challenge for the students to complete their programs.
He spoke about the student Urgent Aid bursary program that provides the students support in the times of need. While there had been funding from major benefactors, the program was oversubscribed and there was need to continue to seek more funding.
This lead Lech describing the NSCC Foundation and the Make Way capital campaign. With a provincial goal of $25 Million, each campus had a sub goal of their own. Money raised locally would stay with the local campus.
In the course of the campaign over the past several months, he had been engaged in discussions with leaders in the community to show them what the College could offer and to seek out partnerships that would lead to community growth. Ultimately if the students of the collage succeed in their educational goals, the whole community will be better off.
Lech was thanked by Past President Ted Jordan.
