April 30, 2018 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: Christine Blair was chair for the day and she asked President Alana to lead the group in the singing of O Canada.  This was followed by a moment of personal reflection.

Visitors/Guests: Al Cooze was the guest of Ken Maclean.  This was Al's second visit of the club.

Speaker: Today's speakers were Jeff Simms, Owner/Operator of the Bike Monkey/Ice Monkey in Truro and Ashley Simms, Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture for the Town of Truro.  They were here today to talk about the Railyard in Victoria Park.

Jeff was born and raised in Old Barns.  He started the Bike Monkey about 5 years ago. Since then he has been active with various partners to continue to develop biking as a recreational activity in the area.  Ashley is also from the area having worked at the Athletic Center of DalAC before joining the staff at the town. She is responsible for all the Parks and Recreation programs and infrastructure in Truro.

Jeff and Ashley outlined the development of Biking in Victoria Park.  Over the past 20 years some 40 Km of trials have been developed through the Park by a dedicated group of volunteers.  A number of events and races have been created such as the "Victoria's Secret" Mountain Bike Race and more recently the Colchester Short Track series of bike races. These events have grown considerably.  The park has become a "destination" for people to come and ride their bikes or simply to come and observe the races.

This development of bike tourism has lead to the need to take the initiative to the next level by branding the site (the Railyard), making improvements to the infrastructure (signs, trials, washrooms etc) and finally, hiring someone to do continuous maintenance of the site and make further improvements.  The project was in phase one and the branding initiative is underway.  There was a presence at the Saltscapes Expo for example and brochures about the facility had been passed out to raise awareness.

A new website is in development that would highlight the full project including features such as the Bike Skills Park

The second phase of the project will include some of the hard infrastructure such as washrooms, change rooms and showers.

It is envisioned that the park will be used all year long as new Fat Bikes allowed for riding all winter long. More and different competitions will happen and this will bring even more people to the Truro area to enjoy what we have to offer.

One interesting idea was a partnership with Via Rail that would bring a special train from Halifax to Truro loaded with cyclists for the weekend rides and events. These cyclists would have to have accommodations, food and supplies while here.

Ashley and Jeff were thanked by Rotarian Matt Redmond.  Matt has two young boys, both active in the Short Track program, so he spoke from experience about how much fun it is.

Announcements and Reports:
  • Ted reported on Charter Night.
    • He started by acknowledging that he has missed recognizing the presence of our AG, Jim Gould at the event. Sorry.

    • Ted thanked all involved, particularly our sponsors Canadian Tire, NSCC Truro Campus and the Best Western Truro - Glengarry.

  • Lydia reported that she has been speaking with Oussematou, our contact in the Cameroon and had a update on the very positive effect our renovated classrooms were having.
  • Judy reported on discussions about the summer social.  It was decided to have it on August 19th at the home of Richard and Maralyn Bowness on Shortts Lake.  This was also their anniversary so we can help them celebrate.
  • Tom thanked Andrew MacDonald for hosting us on the April 26th Vocational visit.  It was a very interesting tour of Maritime Auto Parts.  He was planning another visit for May and hoped that more Rotarians would attend when the place was announced.
President's Report:
  • President Alana read a nice letter of thank you from John Kelderman, the recipient of the Community Service Award. She thanked the recognition committee for their work.
  • There would be a tree planting project in conjunction with the Scouts this coming Saturday starting at 9:00am. Thank you to Audrie-Jo for arranging this.  It starts at 9am at the top of Young Street. Please come and bring boots.  There are lots of trees to plant. Register on-line
  • The next Directors meeting would be held on May 8th at the home of Barbara and Jim Goit. 7:00 pm.  All members welcome. Please register on-line.
  • The Pride Parade was coming up July 14th.  There were several members who would be in it this year.  We would likely partner again with DalAC.  Let Alana know if you are interested in going in the parade.
Happy Mug: Happy Rotarians included:
  • Richard who was happy to be home from the south.
  • Kirk who was leaving for a trip to the southwestern US.
  • Ed who was also happy to be home.

Vocational Visit to Maritime Auto Parts
On the club's vacational tour April 26th several members of the Rotary Club of Truro were given a tour and explanation of the Auto Recycling and Parts business by owner and Rotarian Andrew MacDonald   It was fascinating.  He explained how the cars came to the facility and how ultimately almost every part was turned into something that could be used again.  Great visit.
