ImageSouth Colchester Interact Club 2012-2013 has elected Melissa Logan as President, Helena Harrison as Vice President, Megan Nielsen Secretary and Kriste McCallum Treasurer.   Wasting no time, they have already chosen a cause they want to raise money for.

‘Spread the Net is a grassroots campaign designed to motivate, educate and inspire Canadians to help end preventable malaria deaths by raising funds and awareness to support the purchase and distribution of bed nets to children and families in Africa’.  What really appealed to the SCA Interact group is that a small amount of money could make a big difference.  Every $10 collected will purchase a bed net for a child in Africa. Spread the Net was born when Belinda Stronach and Rick Mercer traveled to Africa in 2006 with Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs.. It was there that they saw first hand the devastating effects of malaria, and the shockingly simple bed net solution so out-of-reach for many thousands of African families.  Club members learned about  Spread the Net   through the Rick Mercer show.

The Interact Club  have already raised $112.00 by making and selling muffins, cupcakes and pretzels at a noon hour bake sale.  That’s enough for 11 nets!  Other ideas for fund raisers include a Talent Show cafe night, a movie night and another bake sale.  In the picture taken of SCA Interact members, they are holding a mosquito net that will be used by  Rotarian Lydia Sorflaten and husband Allan who will be travelling to Bamenda, Cameroon, Africa November 2012.  As well as taking Malarone a drug that acts to kill malaria parasite (schizonticide) in the blood stream, Allan and Lydia will use a mosquito net for protection while sleeping.  On their last visit to the Cameroon, the director of Public Health told them that malaria is the number one health problem in the North West Province of Cameroon.

The SCA Interact group wants to participate in ‘Relay for Life’ and visit seniors at Elk Court.  We are proud of your quiet enthusiasm and wish you a great year.
