The Rotary Club of Truro's 2014-15 Youth Leadership Award was presented to Richard Haines.

Richard started with Cobequid Special Olympics as a registration volunteer in September 2006 and it was a life changing experience. The enthusiasm and spirit here saw there led him to become snowshoe coach later that winter.

In 2008 he became regional coordinator and has since poured in thousands of hours making sure coaches have what they need to help. Ri
chard spends much time fundraising, organizing events, managing website/facebook and he “won't let the summer go by without a BBQ for all involved in Special Olympics".

Three years ago Richard, with help from NSCC’s Dawn Darcy and Community Support program initiated the Active Start program for young athletes, which is held at the Douglas St. Recreation Center.

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Truro, President Jim Gould presented Richard with a donation to the Cobequid Special Olympics for $1500 to assist with the FUNdamentals program, which will be held at the Cougar Dome for kids aged 6-14.
