ImageWelcome to the Rotary Club of Truro, a vibrant organization that has been providing service to the local community for the past 86 years. I am a relative newcomer to Rotary International but I’ve become familiar with the good work of Rotary through my father who was a Charter member of the Hillsboro Rotary Club in PEI.

This year’s Rotary International theme is “Peace Through Service”.  Rotarians continue to play a role in bringing peace to the world. We participate in projects that provide basic health care, sanitation and education where it is most needed. Rotary International is on the verge of eradicating polio from the face of the earth.

The Club’s fundraising efforts enable us to support the many and varied community and international projects. For example, we recently helped purchase two boats for a local fisher’s co-operative in Trinidad. Back home, the Rotary Club of Truro assisted in the purchase of a passenger van for the Colchester Community Workshops. We assisted Maggie’s Place by replacing a storage shed and purchasing school supplies. The Club matched the fund raising efforts of our newly chartered high school “Interact Clubs” or junior Rotary Clubs at Cobequid Educational Centre and South Colchester Academy. CEC’s fund raising efforts were directed at the Make-A –Wish Foundation while SCA targeted the purchase of Shelter Boxes for use in disaster-stricken areas throughout the world.

Together, with the generous support of our community, local businesses and citizens, who have always been there to support our fundraising efforts, we are making a difference in the lives of people less fortunate than others. Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self”. Our members are local men and women who aspire to this motto and want to get involved in projects that give back to the community in which we live and work.

I am looking forward to another active and engaging year for our Club. We always welcome new members who too, have an interest in service to others.
