Nov 20, 2017 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: President Alana was chair for the day.  She asked Laurie to lead the group in the singing of O Canada which was followed by the moment of personal reflection.

Visitors/Guests: Ken Henderson, Colchester Historical Society.

Member Health: Barbara and Laurie both reported that they had visited with Garth who was now recovering at home. While he was making great progress, it may be a while before he is able to return to club meetings. Calls and visits welcome.

Happy Mug: Happy Rotarians today included Mike Dolter whose son and family are relocating to Truro and Alana who attended the DalAC scholarship Banquet.

50/50: Wayne Gillis had the lucky ticket and this time the Joker appeared, so he went away with the $221 pot.  Congratulations.

  • Jim Gould reported that there would be Foundation Grants training for clubs in Northern Nova Scotia on Nov 27th at The Holiday Inn.
  • Judy reminded the group about two upcoming events.
  • Mark brought members up to date regarding the Christmas Index Distribution Centre.
    • The Christmas Index Distribution Center is going to be setup on Saturday Nov 25th at 82 Esplanade, Truro. That's right next door to Murphy's Fish and Chips.  Some volunteers are needed between 10 and 12 to help move boxes of toys from 28 Esplanade to 82 Esplanade.
    • December 4th the center will open for intake of items. We will need volunteers each day for 2 or 4 hour shifts between 12 and 4 pm each day for two weeks.  Mark passed around signup sheets.  Minimum two people are needed for each shift.
    • December 16th will be packing day between 10 and 1 pm. Volunteers needed.  Mark has sheets.
    • December 19th will be distribution day.  Some volunteers needed.
    • Dates for boxing up the remaining toys after Christmas TBA.
President's Report:
  • Ken MacDonald reviewed the draft financial statements for June 30 year-end. They were approved by the board and will be presented to the club at the AGM on December 4.
  • Augusto Enriquez’ offer of a free concert. Proposal to hold concert at Marigold during Rotary Week in April although that may be too late as they wish to ship the instruments to Cuba in April. Revenue could be donated to Los Primos along with any instruments collected. Barb will follow up with Augusto regarding dates. As to the specific ask they have made of the club, Matt, as International Chair, will do some further research and ask for assistance as needed of club members.
  • Laurie brought information to me regarding the STRIVE scholarship program from PEI as a potential model for our scholarship program. Agreement that we may want to revisit who receives bursaries and the criteria upon which they are based. The Board recommends sharing this for input with the Bursary Committee chair for discussion at the committee level and to make a recommendation to the board. Consideration could be made to add an award this year as a trial in addition to our existing bursaries as we have additional youth funds from Bollywood.
  • Club
    • Alana reviewed current status of activities towards Presidential Citation; many of our activities qualify without actively working to achieve it. We will review status again in February.
    • Further to Rod’s work on a trial supper meeting in lieu of one lunch meeting per month, the board approved starting in January 2018 on 2nd Monday of each month. So that means our first meeting back after the Holidays will be Monday, January 8 at 5:00 pm at the Glengarry. We won’t schedule a speaker for that evening, but will have some fun and frivolity instead!
  • Community
    • There was a request for assistance for dental work which came to less than $300 so Adam approved the expense.
  • Vocational
    • We had a good conversation about opportunities to bring vocational service to youth in the community. We discussed Cultiv8, Enactus (who are our guest speakers next week), Junior Achievement, etc. More work will be done in this area, most likely partnering the Vocational and Youth portfolios.
    • Our first Vocational visit is scheduled for this Thursday, November 23, 4:30-5:30 pm at G&G Computers. Thank you to Keith for offering to host the event. I encourage as many people as possible to enjoy the tour, and possibly have some camaraderie afterwards!
  • Membership
    • Marilyn Brown requested a leave of absence through May 2018 which was approved. During her absence, Sharon Corcoran will fulfill the responsibilities of Membership Chair.
    • Darlene Stevenson, who had attended a few meetings with Alana, was approved for membership by the board. Still waiting the one week notice on the bulletin to confirm her. She is anxious to get involved.
    • Still looking for a speaker for Charter Night, as all the individuals approached to date are not available. Discussion ensued regarding the teacher from up north who won the $1M prize. Ted to follow up.
  • Next Director's  meeting December 5 at Jim and Barb Goit’s house, before our Christmas Party.
Speaker: Even though this was supposed to be a club assembly, Ken Henderson from the Colchester Historical Society was given time to speak about the Colchester Historeum and the Heat the Historeum Campaign.

Ken talked about Gving Tuesday. GivingTuesday is a National Giving Day. Most people know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  GivingTuesday is on November 28, this year.

Giving Tuesday is a new Canadian movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Cyber Monday. The “Opening day of the giving season,” it is a day where charities, companies and individuals join together to share commitments, rally for favourite causes and think about others.

The Colchester Historeum is one of the few community museums and archives in Nova Scotia that are open to the public year-round. Despite great support from the various levels of government, this important service to our community comes at a cost. The heating our beautiful heritage building has an average annual energy cost of over $17,000. The Society is asking for the public’s support to help us cover these costs and requested that the Rotary Club members donate as well as spread the word.

Everyone is invited to join the Historical Society on GivingTuesday, for our Heat the Historeum event! A fun-filled day with entertainment, refreshments, and special guests. With performances by the Happy Harmonies, the Flirtatious Five, Bob & CJ, and more!

Free admission! All welcome!

Congratulations.
Mrs. Frances Sproule donates Canada 150 Quilt to Club

Mrs. Frances Sproule is a quilt maker extraordinaire! Over the years, her quilts have gone as far away as Australia. But at 95, quilting has slowed down!

Frances's late husband, Clifton H. (Tip) Sproule was a Rotarian in the Truro Club for many years.  Frances always contributed baby quilts to the Rotary auction. She is a wonderful person with a great sense of humour.

Frances donated this gorgeous Canada 150 quilt to the Rotary Club of Truro.  It is all hand stitched and hand embroidered and took countless hours to make.

The club will use it as a fundraiser to support club programs.

Thank you, Frances.

Record of Formation of Rotary Club of Truro Uncovered.
Catherine Saunders (wife of Rotarians Dale Saunders) was researching her family history (her Mom was born on Port Hood Island, Inverness County). As she was looking through the ‘Inverness County Bulletin’ in the records at the Nova Scotia Archives in Halifax and happened upon an article about the formation of the Rotary Club of Truro dated February 27th, 1926.

The article refers to a meeting in Truro "last night" (Feb 26th) although other newspaper articles indicate it was Tuesday night (Feb 23rd) which is the night our history indicates was the actual date.   There were 25 members of the Rotary Club of Halifax and 15 members of the Rotary Club of New Glasgow who met with about 15 men from the Truro area to have dinner and discuss the formation of a Rotary Club in Truro.  The next meeting of the new club was to be held on March 5th.

While official records from RI show the Charter date as April 2nd, 1926, our own club history shows that March 5th is the date the club held its own inaugural meeting and received its charter from Charles Burchell, third Vice President of Rotary International.  The paper work may have taken time to get to RI headquarters.
