The Rotary Club of Truro supported Hospice with a donation of $10,000 in September 2009. This was the seed funding required to move forward in hiring a qualified grief counsellor.

Most Hospice programs are delivered by trained volunteers. Hospice felt it critical to the growth of Hospice to add a Registered Social Worker, trained in Grief Counselling to the Hospice team. Hospice grief counsellor, Serena Lewis, RSW, was hired in late October 2009.

"The addition of this position adds significantly to the level of grief and anticipatory grief we are able to support", says Cathrine Yuill, Executive Director of the Colchester East Hants Hospice Society. "

Serena has been working closely with the palliative team and has been regularly consulted in cases where families are facing crisis or require significant support at end of life. Serena has also been able to provide individual and group counselling to a number of people who are struggling with their grief. In addition to these important areas of new programming, Serena has been a key addition to our team in providing her expertise and assessment to the continued development of our existing programs".

"The Hospice Society is very fortunate to have been selected by the Rotary Club for this funding support. We are pleased to be providing these important services to the people of Colchester and East Hants knowing that together we build stronger families and communities. Thank you Rotary!"

Rotarian Marilyn Brown has worked for many years to establish Hospice in the area and Rotarian Sharon Corcoran is serving on the Colchester East Hants Hospice Society board as Vice President. www.cehhospice.org Colchester East Hants Hospice Society provides care and support to families as they face serious illness, death and grief.

Hospice volunteers and professionals work closely with the Palliative Care team under a philosophy of care that values quality of life until death and in putting the patient at the centre and in control of his or her own life and care. Most hospice-palliative care is given in the home, with a family member or members serving as the main hands-on caregiver, however the care can be given in any setting including the hospital, a nursing home, and hopefully in the future, in a residential hospice.

Colchester East Hants Hospice Society was founded in 2004 as a grassroots effort to support families facing life threatening illness, death and grieving the loss of their loved one. The organization, lead by a committed Board of Directors, has very successfully developed and launched programs and services in line with the mission and mandate.
