Saturday, September 27th was a day of firsts for nine Indonesian young adults participating in the Canada World Youth Exchange program, thanks to a day proudly hosted by the Rotary Club of Truro.

Most of the participants had not seen moose, beaver, porcupine, deer, eagles, hawks, bear, otters and ground hogs.  Our native animals at the ShubieWildLifePark are different from those in Inuvik, Vancouver and Labrador where three of the nine Canadian participants call home.  Three of the Canadian participants speak French as their first language!

The Duff family of ShorttsLake prepared their home for the honored guests.  The Duffs all speak Indonesian so Indonesian became the language of choice for the Indonesians.   They enjoyed swimming (brave individuals given this to be the end of Sept), boating, canoeing and dancing Indonesian style on the dock.

The group tackled pumpkin carving with great success.  A large bon fire was lit, two big pots of corn were set to boil and pizza was ordered.  As many of the participants were observing Ramadan, the fast could not be broken until sundown (7pm).  Some host families and several Rotarians joined us for the campfire, corn and pizza.

We ended the day with a sharing circle.  It was amazing to hear that this day held so many firsts for the participants: seeing animals and birds Native to Nova Scotia, canoeing, swim in a cold lake, carving a pumpkin, first bon fire and corn boil.

What a dynamic group of people.   What talent!  What a great program.  Thank you to our community of Truro and to the host families for making the Canada World Youth/Indonesian program possible.  We all benefit from the cultural enrichment.
