Committee reports:
  1. Directors’ reports from Directors meeting on Jan. 12, 2016 - Kevin
    • Kevin invited new Rotarians to fill a vacancy on the Out of the Cold community group.
    • Mike Topley had been our person for some time.  Thanks for your service Mike!!! Derrick Higgins accepted the role, and our thanks to Derrick for stepping up!
  2. Community - Dave Mills
    • A request from Chad Normes on a book he presented to the Club on Bullying, a book that was directed towards young children. Dave indicated that he was going to get clarification on if the books were being sold.  Chad was looking for support on 100 books and 100 inserts.
    • Annual Request from Easter Seals – Directors decided we would not be supporting again this year.
    • We received our annual bill for our foster child $468
    • Received a request for support/purchase of custom made shoes for a community member in need. Total cost is $1800. Dave recommended $300 – no motion needed. Shoes were required for a mobility issue.
  3. International - Alana
    • Alana provided an overview of the 13-year old girl we are supporting in Tanzania.  Her home is concrete block, asbestos/tin roof and grass floor.  Latrine located on property and nearest water is 30 minutes away. He favorite school subject is math.
  4. Refugees:
    • Ted represents the club in this area.  He noted there are 6 different associations in Truro looking at refugee sponsorship. The committee that Ted is representing Rotary on wants to get their first application in by the end of February.  Families will need significant support once they get here. They need volunteers to work with these families in numerous areas. The committee is looking at leveraging the 50/50 cost share with the Government. It appears to be structured that the committee covers the first 6 months of costs and the Government covers the next 6. The Rotary Club would potentially provide financial support and volunteer support as needed. The next meeting is Jan 25th and they are hoping to sponsor a family of 8.
  5. Yearbook - Larry
    • Larry reported that the 2016 Yearbook is in circulation (hand of applause from members), and the Yearbook Committee is meeting tonight to review past year and begin planning immediately for the coming year.  Larry thanks all Rotarians who helped in this year’s effort.
  6. Meetings - Larry
    • Larry also presented a new format and guide for the Chair re: noon and Director’s Luncheon for meetings.  The guide is designed to keep meetings on time and on focus.   Meg will be working with the new format, and Alana will review with club at a club meeting to ensure that everyone is comfortable with the new format and timing
  7. Charter Night and Home Hosting for District Convention - Jim
    • Jim provided an overview of work to date with Charter night – Feb. 18th at the Glengarry.  Tickets are $40.00 each, and it would be good to see at least 90 attendees (club and community) given this will be our 90th year as a club. Jim hoping for more, but 90 is his ‘minimum’ hope!!!!
    • Home Hosting – 28 places to date, but we need 50.  Jim invites all club members to consider hosting a couple of conference attendees, or more…
  8. Charter Night Awards - Ken MacDonald
    • Ken overviewed the current search for the Community Service Award and invited members to submit nominations for same.  The individual nominees should be those who have contributed to community, above and beyond….
Note for all Club members:   For those who seem to have challenges attending non meetings, I respectfully ask, if you can make only one meeting a month, this is the one…   our Director’s Luncheon.  In this time we cover what our club is doing, who/what is being supported, share the asks we get, and note activities in which we are engaged.  I have to say that since I have become President I am very concerned about attendance and what the club means to members.  We have our core group every week, and this group pays their share of the meals and room rental.  For those who do not show, the club has to cover the Glengarry costs for their ‘non-paid’ share.   I ask that you make an effort, at least every second week to be ‘part of the club’ and not just ‘on the list’…   Thanks!!!!

Adjourned: 1:00 pm
