June 11, 2018 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: VP Ryan was the chair this evening and started the singing of O Canada himself.  This was followed by the moment of personal reflection.

Ryan was speaking for many when he complimented Judy on the quality of this evening's meal.

Visitors/Guests:
  • Kyle Andrews was the guest of his partner, Rotarian Jim Harman.
  • Al Cooze was making a return visit.
  • Soon to be member of the club, Rotarian Terry Pook was with us again.
Speaker: Our scheduled speaker was unable to join us this evening so travelling Rotarian and Program Chair, Kevin Quinlan filled in as last moment substitute.

Kevin has been a Rotarian since 2001.  He was president in 2015-16.  A proud Newfoundlander, Kevin retired from the NSCC as Principal of the Truro Campus. Now when he is not at his summer place in NL, he travels widely for CESO.  And while travelling, he searches out Rotary Clubs to make contact with. Most recently he was in the Philippines and before that, Mongola on a projects.  It was his experiences in Mongolia that he highlighted for us this evening.

Using slides Kevin explained how he flew from Halifax to Toronto and over the North Pole to South Korea and then on to Ulaanbaatar the capital of Mongolia.  He was impressed with the airline, airports and people all along the way.

He describe Ulaanbaatar as a modern, rapidly glowing city with a fascinating architecture and history.  He showed many pictures of the high rise building interspersed with temples, museums, and older Soviet era apartments, government buildings and abandon military bases. Kevin gave a brief explanation of the history of Mongolia from the time of Chinggis Khaan (1162) a national hero in the county, who conquered the known world to the Black Sea to times dominated by China and the Soviets.

Mongolia is a relatively young county having been independent only since 1990. Mineral rich with Gold and Copper, Mongolia is now in a growth phase. However, with 30% of the population of 3 Million nomadic or semi-nomadic and many living in the Ger (or Yurt) with no water, sanitation or electricity, even in the city, there are problems with poverty. The Rotary Club that Kevin had been in contact with has a project to provide a school in these Ger districts for young children who are left home alone to look after stoves. The Club would welcome international assistance for their project.

Interestingly, it was discovered that the brother of our newest Rotarian, Terry Pook spends a large part of his time in this area working to provide proper stoves for these Ger dwelling people.

Kevin was most impressed with the people.  Open and friendly, they were eager to be connected to the world and move forward.

Matt Redmond thanked Kevin for his presentation. There was so much to see in the world.

Member Health: Kevin talked to Clyde yesterday. He is still recovering from his fall and using a walker for balance. Joanna reported that Barbie is recovering from her surgery. She is not home yet, but when she is, she will be interested in visitors.

Announcements and Reports:
  • Lech reported that the Yearbook project was behind schedule but should be delivered by next Monday. It should run even easier that last year.
  • Mark reported that he and number of others would be at the Food Back this Friday.  Please join them from 1 - 4 or any part thereof.
President's Report:
  • President Alana reminded people about the Director's meeting today immediately after the regular meeting.
  • She also asked Rotarians to be sure to attend the Semi annual meeting in two weeks as it was important that we have a quorum.
  • There was also a reminder to join DG Don Sword and DGE Rob Christie and their families for the changeover garden party to be held at Rob and Irene’s home (110 Water Street, Pictou) starting at 2:00 pm. Everyone is welcome to join in the festivities and meet Rotarians from around the District. Light snacks and refreshments will be available.
  • President Alana then induceted Terry Pook as a member of the club assisted by Ryan who was standing in for Sharon Corcoran who is Terry's sponsor.
Happy Mug: There were a number of Happy Rotarians including:
  • Kevin who was happy to have a new doctor as his current one was retiring.
  • Derrick for a new home and a new dog.
  • Terry for being inducted and for Kevin's presentation. Her brother works there but she has never seen pictures of the type of environment he is in.
  • Jim Harman  because 5 of his paintings have been chosen for a display in Gallery 215 in Maitland this weekend. Stop by.
  • Adam who had been at a Bluejays game in Toronto and had won the 50/50.  32K!  WOW!
50/50: Chester had the lucky ticket but missed the Joker.  The pot is getting big!

Member proposal:  The Directors have approved the recommendation by the Membership committee for the induction of Mr. Al Cooze as a member of the Club.  Al has been to the club meetings several times and has already helped with service work.  Before he retired, he was the General Manager for Zellars. He has been active with other service groups such as Kinsman and the Alzheimer's Society.  Al's sponsor is Ken Maclean.

Kevin Quinlan visits Rotary Club in Mongolia

Our travelling Rotarian, Kevin Quinlan, met up with the Ulaanbaatar Peace Avenue Rotary Club in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, which was celebrating its 5th anniversary.

Kevin reports that the Club is the 1st and only club formed totally by former Rotaract members. They stick to the 18-30 year rule so after the age of 30 they can join a club. A group of Rotaractors got together and formed this club.  There are 14 Rotary Clubs, 15 Rotaract Clubs and 3 Interact clubs in the city of  Ulaanbaatar.

The evening was about celebrating their infant hearing testing project. There were 4 Americans and 2 Canadians, an implant surgeon, audiologist, 2 speech therapists, speech pathologist and teacher of the deaf in attendance.

They talked about 2 other projects: a water project in the Gobi Desert and a project in the Ger District to provide preschool and food to the poorest of the poor. Children  are left alone in the Gers to keep the coal fire going. Ger is a tent like structure many people live in - no water or electricity, and they burn coal in a stove which pollutes the city big time in winter.  The acting president (the president had just had a baby) invited Kevin to their next ‘regular’ meeting as well.

Kevin had a Guinness at the Grand Khan Irish Pub. He noted that the club is fairly gender neutral and that they inducted 2 new members at the meeting.
