Opening/Chair: Tom Savary was the chair this evening and he asked President Alana to lead the group in the singing of O Canada. Some had the new words. This was followed by the moment of personal reflection.
Visitors/Guests: Other that our guest speaker, David Gillis (son of Rotarian Wayne Gillis), there were no other visitors or guests.
Speaker: David Gillis was introduced by the chair. Born in Sydney, he has been a resident of Colchester County for 30 years. A graduate of NSCC Truro, David also has a BBA from St. FX. He has been manager of the Enterprise Rent a Car office for 9 of the past 11 years he has worked there.
David has been a member of the Kinsman Club of Bible Hill for 5 year and has been president of the past year. His brother Paul is also a member.
Dave and his wife Trish live with their two children, Rebecca and Nathanial, in Valley.
Dave described the history of the Kinsman Clubs outlining some of the similarities and differences between Kinsman and Rotary.
Kinsman Clubs started in 1920 in Ontario and now there are 6000 members in 466 clubs across the county. The organization, which exists only in Canada, is organized into something similar to Rotary Districts. There are 47 Kinsman Clubs in NS, PEI and Newfoundland which is the same as Rotary. Their Atlantic zone also include NB however.
One of the major difference is that while there are mixed gender clubs, there are also Kinsman, which is male, and Kinette which is for women. The Kinsman Club of Bible Hill currently has 23 members.
The Club has two business meetings a month in the evening and one monthly board meeting. There are also plenty of hands-on work activity and social events for the members including golf, curling and house parties. The members try to have fun in everything they do.
The Kinsman Club's major fundraiser include the Exhibition Food Canteen, Casino Nights and the New Years' Dance to name just a few. They expect to net a total of $45,000 annually in fundraising.
The club supports similar causes in the community to Rotary including MS, student Bursaries, the Food Bank, Hospice and the Boys and Girls Club.
Challenges for the club are also similar. Membership attraction and retention are always a concern. Having efficient and effective fundraising is also something that always needs attention.
Dave finished by congratulating the Rotary Club on the work they do and thanking us for the opportunity to talk about another service organization in our community.
The speaker was thanked by Jim Gould who has been a Kinsman himself is other places he has lived.

Announcements and Reports:
Lech reported that he still had plenty of yearbooks for members to distribute. The newstand was at Sobeys and was doing well.
Ryan reported on events for Rotary Week. Please come out and support the various activities especially the Flag Raising and Tuesday social event. Bring a friend and potential members. Make sure you have your ticket for Charter Night. Let him know if you are going to come on the tours of Rotary House or are planning to come to the Saturday Farmer's market. If there are enough, he will be set up shifts so that there are not too many around at the same time.
Program Chair Kevin reported that he was looking for speakers for July and August at this point.
President's Report: President Alana reported on two musicals that had come to her attention. One was put on by the Rotary Club of Pictou and the other is the CEC annual play.
She reminded people about the flag raising after next Monday's Lunch meeting and hoped for a good turnout. She also reminded people that the meeting the week after was going to be at the NSCC and not the Glengarry.

This April 16-22nd will mark our first annual Rotary Week in Truro. I’m excited to announce that we have a full itinerary of activities for Rotarians and friends of Rotary to participate in. I would encourage every club member to take in at least one event. The public is always welcome.
Rotary Week Itinerary
Monday April 16, 12:00-2pm, We will have the regular lunch meeting and then walk or drive down to the Town buildings where Rotarian and town CAO, Mike Dolter will raise the Rotary Flag.
Rotarian Youwei Chen answered the call to the club from the Canadian Cancer Society to help sell Daffodils in support of their annual Daffodil month fundraising efforts. Over the period of March 22 to 24, Youwei and his friends he recruited to help him, Zhujun Qiu and Ziwei Zheng, covered shifts at the booth and sold all their flowers.
This was the first time Youwei had been involved with a fund raising effort for an organization and he said they all had fun.
Rotary Service comes in many forms and helping other charities other than Rotary reach their goals is just one of many ways it can be done. Thank you Youwei.
