Nov 5, 2018 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: Tom Savary was the Chair today. He asked Alana to lead the group in the singing of O Canada. This was followed by the moment of personal reflection. Tom asked that we think about our veterans and first responders.

Visitors/Guests: Joanne Bouley was the guest of Sharon Corcoran.

Speaker: Tiffany Bartlett is the Chief Executive Officer Colchester-East Hants Public Library.  She grew up in St. Andrews-by-the-sea, New Brunswick. She holds a BA from Mount Allison University in English Literature, and a Masters of Library and Information Science from Dalhousie University.

Tiffany began her career with the New Brunswick Public Library Service. Working primarily in the Saint John area, Tiffany held several roles with New Brunswick Public Library Service, including: Technical Services Librarian for the Fundy Library Region, Library Director for the Kennebecasis Public Library in Quispamsis from 2013-2017, Acting Assistant Regional Director for the Fundy Library Region, and Head of Community Services for the Saint John Free Public Library.

Passionate about literacy and giving back to her community, Tiffany has previously served as a big sister for Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Saint John, a board member for the Fog Lit Festival (Saint John) and treasurer for the Quality Learning New Brunswick board from 2013-2018.

Tiffany moved to Truro in February 2018 with her two cats, Bingley and Darcy, to take on her new role as Chief Executive Officer for the Colchester-East Hants Public Library. Tiffany is enjoying getting to know the residents of the Truro, Colchester and East Hants communities and exploring the local area.

In her presentation, Tiffany explained the various programs of the Library and how they attempted to help people in our community with not only the basic reading/writing variety of literacy, but literacy in its other forms including; Computer and Technology, Media, Information, Financial, Health and Food Literacy. There were library resources and programs targeting each of these areas and more.

The Conference Board of Canada has given Nova Scotia a "D" rating in Literacy and it was stated that 26% of unemployment was related to poor literacy. So there is much work to do.

Tiffany answered questions from Rotarians and then was thanked by Lydia.

Member Health: Condolences were expressed to Joanna on the sudden loss of her father in Australia.

Support The Rotary Foundation in November
In November, we celebrate Rotary Foundation Month and the contributions our members make to their communities and around the world. And 27 November is Giving Tuesday, a global online movement for charities and individuals to celebrate and encourage giving.

This year, make The Rotary Foundation your charity of choice. Donations to the Foundation help supply vaccines to protect children from polio, train peacebuilders in conflict resolution, and build sustainable communities for a better future. You CAN make a difference.  Be the Inspiration.
