July 9, 2018 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: Ken MacDonald was chair for this evening meeting held at the Truro Golf Club.  He asked Alana to lead the group in the singing of O Canada which was followed by a moment of personal reflection.

Visitors/Guests: Olivia Stevenson, the student we supported for the Adventure in Citizenship program was our guest this evening.

Speaker: Ken introduced Olivia Stevenson, an honours student who has just graduated from grade 11 at CEC.  She is very heavily involved with student organizations and sports activities and still finds time to volunteer her time in the community.

Olivia had been chosen by the club to attend the Adventure in Citizenship program run by the Rotary Club of Ottawa.  The Adventure in Citizenship program brings together a select group of 200 students from across Canada to learn about Canadian democratic institutions through meetings with political leaders, senior officials and each other. The Rotary Club of Truro has participated in this program since 1951.

Olivia outlined her experiences at the Adventure in Citizenship program and described its effect on her.  She mentioned all the new friends she had met and  her new appreciation for the system of government that many of us take for granted.  She told us that she had been chosen by the other 20 delegates from Nova Scotia to make a presentation on behalf of all those attending from the province.  She learned that she could overcome her fear and has learned to love public speaking!

She also learned that she was on the right track in her life.  Surrounded by 200 others who shared her outlook and desire to take action, she can see more clearly that she wants to be even MORE involved and she plans to carry that forward into next year in high school and beyond.  There is no doubt that she will.

Olivia was thanked by Barbara Goit, who, on behalf of the club expressed, our pleasure in hearing how our sponsorship for the AIC program has had such an impact.

Announcements and Reports:
  • Members are reminded of the Truro Pride Parade on July 14. Members will be partnering with the DalAC float. Please come out and support the effort.

  • Judy reminded members about the upcoming Summer Social on Aug 19th.  More details will be coming out with an invitation.
  • Kirk reported that the Annual Workshops Golf tournament would be held on September 13th.  The club usually puts in one or two teams and the event needs volunteers. Keep the date.
  • It was reported that Ken Maclean's mother had passed away.
President's Report:  New president Ryan welcomed everyone to the Truro Golf Club. He highlighted a few of the decisions from the July 3rd Directors meeting.
  • The Directors had confirmed the continuing Honouray status of Grant, Clyde and Lloyd. In addition Al Hollis had been added to the Honourary list.
  • An offer for naming rights to the Kiwanis Park had been discussed.  For a number of reasons, the Directors had decided to decline the opportunity.
  • The Music Instrument project was moving ahead.  This Rotary District project will see musical instruments installed in the civic square supported by the Town of Truro, the Club, the District and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
  • The organization chart and Committee structure was just about complete.
  • The club budget had been passed. It had been decided that the amount that Directors can spend without board authority be increased from $300 to $500. This will allow for quicker responses and streamlined board meetings.
  • An International project put forward by Kevin as a result of this trip to Mongolia had been approved.  $500 had been sent to a club there to support the development of a school for children who live a Ger (tent) community.
  • The dates for the 2019 Rotary Week are being firmed up. There is a lot of conflicting events to consider, so the week of 8 - 13th of April 2019 with Charter Night being April 11th seems like the best time.
Happy Mug: There was no Happy mug although Wayne told a great story about the edventures that he and Brian had had trying to get to their hotel due of street closures as a result of Pride activities in Toronto.

50/50: Not held.

Closing: 6:30 pm

Club Supports Project in Mongolia
As a result of a visit to Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia by our travelling Rotarian Dr. Kevin Quinlan, the Rotary Club of Truro has supported a project that a Rotary club there has started.

The project is to set up schools in the Ger (traditional tents) community for young children who have to stay home to tend the fires in the tents while their families are away.

The president of the club sent a nice note to recognize the contribution.
