Sept 23, 2018 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: Anna Rutherford was chair for the day and she asked Matt Hunter to lead the group in the singing of O Canada.  This was followed by a moment of personal reflection.

Visitors/Guests:
  • Daniel Roode was a visiting Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Westville.
  • Matt Berrigan, Truro & Colchester Partnership for Economic Prosperity was a guest of Alana.
  • Hattie Dyck was a guest who would be inducted as a member later in the meeting.
  • Kyle Andrews, speaker for the day.
Speaker:  Kyle Andrews lives in Maitland with his partner, Rotary member Jim Harman. Kyle grew up in the small village of Aulds Cove by the Canso Causeway. He suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and has also been diagnosed with borderline personality and coconcurrent disorders. He is also diagnosed HIV-positive.

Despite all obstacles of the post-traumatic stress disorder from childhood due to sexual, mental and physical abuse, he completed 4 years of university in 22 months as an honor student. Kyle was a telecommunications engineer who helped pilot and bring to market high speed internet in Canada and North America as well as the development of video and internet over the telephone line and Canada's first e-commerce website. He purchased his first house in downtown Toronto at age 22.

However post-traumatic stress disorder caught up with Kyle who later suffered from drug addiction and homelessness for many years.  He has overcome many of his obstacles after year of therapy and with the assistance of his emotional support dog Duke. He's met the Governor General, Sheldon Kennedy and Theo Fleury.

Kyle lived in one of the poorest housing projects in Canada for eight years, many times with no running water, elevator or heat.  Despite being clean and sober, he was living in the middle of struggling new immigrants, the disabled, the elderly, drug addicts and the destitute. Being among such high risk behaviors is not healthy.

Through therapy and a determined effort to "reprogram my brain," Kyle has turned his life around. He utilized the tools he learned in therapy to co-author a book with several other survivors of sexual abuse from all over the globe. He now gives talks to first-year students at the NSCC on the topics of prejudice based on people's appearance, drug addiction, self-care, and identifying victims of abuse.  He enjoys gardening, fishing, remote control boating and motocross and is also a photographer and craftsman who has works showing at Gallery 215 in Selma.

Kyle spoke not only about the personal and familial results of sexual abuse but also of the economic impact - a staggering $3.7 billion annually. He recommended the website littlewarriors.ca for further information. He encouraged members to be aware of the signs that a child is being abused.

Alana provided an emotional thank you to Kyle.

Member Health: Alana update the group on Joe's health and thanked everyone for their concern.

Stories
Australian Rotary Friendship Team in Truro
There were ten members of the Rotary Friendship Exchange Team in the Truro area from Sunday Sept 22nd to Tuesday the 24th when they were handed off to Rotarians from PEI.

During those three days Jim Gould and Jim Goit showed them some of the sights of our area including Sugar Moon Farm, The Raging Crow, the Millbrook Cultural & Millbrook Heritage Centre, Balmoral Mill, The Train Station Inn, Tatamagouche Brewing Co, Jost Winery, Grohmann Knives and the Hector Center. We also managed to have a great social on Monday evening attended by 11 club members, family members and our guests.

The Rotarian couples were billeted at the homes of Jim & Gloria Gould, Brian and Carol Matthews, Sharon Corcoran and Orland Dickson, Lech and Tari Krzywonos and Jim & Barbara Goit.

New friends were made and a lot was learned about each others homes and Rotary around the world. What a great experience.
