April 16, 2018 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: Ted Jordan was the chair today and he asked President Alana to lead the group in the singing of O Canada.  This was followed by the moment of personal reflection.

Visitors/Guests: There were a number of guests today.
  • David Copus from NSBI was the guest of President Alana.
  • Emily and Tony Haung, owners of the YOKA restaurant were the guests of Brian Matthews.
  • Al Cooze was the quest of Ken Maclean.
Speaker: Paul Graham, CEO of Genrus United was the introduced by Chair Ted. Paul was born on PEI but has lived in the Truro/Bible Hill are for 30 years.  He has been in the pharmaceutical industry for the past 20 years.  Genrus United is his 4th startup company.

Paul stated that currently, over 8 million Canadians have no drug insurance program. Genrus United believes no family should have to choose between their health and their groceries and yet many do.  He related stories of local people who could not afforded needed medications. It is estimated that there are 300,000 people in Nova Scotia in this situation.

Genrus United is a new way for Canadians without a drug plan to receive the same low costs as insurance companies or government programs for the same important medications.  By partnering with certain pharmacies and using the power of bulk purchasing of generic medications, Genrus United is able to offer it's subscribers much lower costs for 120 of the more commonly needed drugs and medications.   Membership is only $20/year for an individual and $35 for a family of 4 and Co-pay at the participating pharmacies is $5 per prescription.

The first of its kind of business in Canada, Genrus United has only been in operation since last December and is growing rapidly. Paul stated that they will make their growth targets earlier than expected and are already planning for expansion nationally. They are also planning to offer similar services in Vision care as well as Dentistry. At this point there had been no marketing effort other than social media and word of mouth referrals.

Members were interested in the business model and its potential to help people in our community.  More details on the company can be found on their companies website.

The speaker was thanked by Rotarian Steve Barteaux.

Member Health: The passing of Bev MacLellan (wife of former Rotarian Bob) was noted.

Announcements and Reports:
  • Ted reported that there were now 122 tickets sold for Charter Night this Thursday.  The cutoff for tickets will be Monday night at midnight.
  • Steve Gallant thanked all those involved with the highly successful RYLA event. There had been 39 students participate which is about our maximum number.
  • Judy Nicholson reported that planning had begin for the summer social.  Once a date had been established invitations would go out.
  • Dave Mills reminded rotarians about the purchase of Rotary themed clothing.  Let him know if you want any of the items available.
President's Report:
  • President Alana began her report by thanking everyone for the great work on RYLA.
  • She then wished everyone one a HAPPY ROTARY WEEK.
  • She also reminded everyone to wear whatever Rotary themed clothing, hats, badges or pins they have this week to events.  All the events seemed to have a good number saying they are attending.  She read the proclamation from the County of Colchester prepared by Mayor Christine Blair.
  • Alana also reminded everyone that next weeks meeting would be at the NSCC cafeteria at the regular noon time.
Happy Mug: Happy Rotarians included:
  • Sharon brought greetings from Marilyn Brown who had visited this weekend. Sharon was also happy to have survived the Home Show.
  • Jim Gould related a very funny story about using a sample product from the Home Show and then having to track down the supplier to get enough to finish the job.
  • Jim Harman was happy for having moved to NS and missing the terrible weather in Ontario.
  • Lydia was happy to have run into a former student who drives as school bus. This person had told her the talk of the students this morning on the bus was about Friday's RYLA event.
50/50: Garth Coffin had the winning ticket but missed the joker so the $69 pot is left to build.

Closing: 1:23 pm

Flag Raising Kicks off Rotary Week

Rotary Week got off to a great start with the official flag raising in front to the Truro Town Hall right after the Club's Monday April 16th regular meeting.

A large number of enthusiastic Rotarians watched as Town of Truro Mayor Bill Mills and Colchester County Mayor (and Rotarian) Christine Blair helped President Alana Hirtle raise the Rotary flag up the pole.  It will fly for the remainder of the week in recognition of the role that Rotary has played in the community for the past 92 years.
