Aug 28, 2017 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: Lydia was chair for the day and opened the meeting with the singing of O'canada and a prayer for Rotary service in the world.

Visitors/Guests: There were no Rotary visitors or guests.

Member Health: No report.

Happy Mug:
  • Joanna was happy for an upcoming family visit and for her sons going to University
  • Ted was happy for a positive outcome to the surgery that his son had undergone and that he was progressing well again.
50/50: Martina had the lucky ticket today but that was as far as her luck went. She missed the joker and was rewarded with the usual club expression of sympathy.  The pot continues to build so it is looking more like "chase the Joker" all the time.

Announcements and Reports:
  • Matt Redmond reported that the Yearbook currently had 200 subscribers, 41 that were new this year.  There are a few more to cover but the sales time was rapidly coming to a close. Kirk had many pictures already taken and was working to clean the rest up.
  • Judy outlined plans for the combined Fall Farm Social and Reception of the Rotary Friendship Exchange team from Estonia and Finland to be held on September 17th. This is a family event running from 11 am to 2 pm.  She is looking for someone with an extra BBQ and to help with the cooking.  There will be Hot Dogs and Hamburgers with salad and blueberry pie. Bring the kids for fun and games.  An invitation has gone out so register and let us know how many to expect.
  • Lydia made a presentation concerning the Global Grant in the Cameroon.  While parts of the project were completed others had been stalled because of civil unrest in the county. The rebuilding of the school was now moving forward and the local contacts were asking to make a reallocation of unspent funding from the Agricultural training portion of the project which had been completed, to make additional improvements to the school.  The board of Directors would have to pass a motion to that effect and then the request could be made to Rotary International.

President's Report: President Alana reported on some of the highlights of the Director's meeting held August 18th at the home of Rod Jones.
  • Reminder of DG Don’s visit October 23. Membership committee is hoping to have an attraction/information reception at 5 pm that day to tie in with his visit; awaiting response regarding his availability
  • Different options for Directors’ agendas are being discussed, including a consent agenda format and adding time allotments to the agenda. To be decided upon at September 5 meeting.
  • Donation to Dal AC student Ivanna Bashkir from Ukraine, whose work visa ran out before her scholarship kicked in; we provided $300 in Sobeys gift cards to assist her.
  • Rod is going to chair Rotary Week committee; he and Alana to meet before Sept 5 meeting to discuss framework.
  • Update on Bollywood night – tickets selling well; Meena Khanna has arranged a henna artist for the Friday evening to do ladies’ hands for $10-15, this will need to be organized ahead of time; Meena has also offered to sell saris from her closet to anyone who would like to buy from her.
  • 100th Anniversary PEI celebration – Alana has learned some room rates and has some rooms on the hold at the Holiday Inn Express for October 1. She will circulate an email with dinner price and room details in order to make arrangements within the next week.
Speaker: No formal speaker as this was a club meeting.

Closing: 1:10 pm

August Rotary After Hours at the Oasis

The Rotary Club of Truro holds a Rotary After Hours meeting once a month to give Rotarians and others a chance to get together in a none formal setting, have some fun and talk about Rotary.  On August 24th we met at the Oasis Bar and Pool area of the  Best Western Truro - Glengarry. Many (most) of us have never been to this space at the Glengarry despite having been at the hotel many many times over the years.  Newly renovated, it a great place to meet, especially on such a beautiful summer evening.

There will be a break in the Rotary After Hours meeting during September given the other events already scheduled but will return October 27th when the club will be combining the meeting with a hosted reception for Rotarians in Truro for the Fall Rotary Leadership Session at the NSCC on October 28th.

We hope to see you at the next event and if you have an idea for an After Hours meeting in the future let us know.
