Announcements and Reports:
- Chair of the Yearbook Committee, Lech outlined the work going on for the launch of the yearbook campaign. It was his hope to have the list updated this week and ready for next week's meeting. Hard copies were circulating at the meeting and members were encouraged to fill in for business that were not spoken for currently. The online list is still available. He was hopeful that Rotarians would get most of the work done before the end of May.
- Ken MacDonald reported for Steve Gallant on the highly successful RYLA event held on Friday. The full story appears later in the bulletin.
- AG Jim Gould reported on planning for the next Bollywood event to be held on Set 30th. He said he has a couple of people helping but he was looking for 3 or 4 people more to help him with the event. Please contact him if you are interested.
- Richard reported on former Truro Rotarian Rick Johnson who had a house along the Ottawa River. It had recently been surrounded by flood water but was undamaged. Rick is owner of a CTC store and was told that it had the highest sales of sump pumps in the country.
President's Report: President Ted updated the club on a few items from the recent Director's meeting.
- The June Director's meeting would be held at the RECC. All welcome.
- The Directors had been approached by Prison Fellowship of Canada and would be asked to make a presentation to the club at some point so we would know more about them.
- Discussions on Charter night had begun but it was determined that we would hold the 2018 edition during the third week of May which we were hoping to have proclaimed by the Town and County as Rotary week. It would be part of a number of events and occasions. Jim Goit noted that while our history says the first meeting of the club was Feb 23, 1926, and that the charter was presented at a meeting on March 5th, 1926, Rotary International maintains that the official club charter date in their records is April 2, 1926. The early records of our club were destroyed in a fire in the 1940s and were reconstituted in 1951, so... the bottom line is we can celebrate any time we like.
- Ted is looking for suggestions for speakers for Charter night. Contact him directly.
- The directors had received the financial report. All is well however there is still an amount outstanding from previous years Yearbook sales that needs to be resolved.
- The Directors approved $2K to go to the family of a baby that needed emergency surgery in Toronto and had significant expenses.
- There was discussion of a movable newsstand with Yearbooks that was currently at Valley Variety. Ed MacDonald was volunteered to move it to Masstown.
- It was reported that the club would not be be able to disburse the funds from the Bethel trust to two recipients for technical reasons. One did not have charitable status and the other had changed their project. We would be open to reconsidering is circumstances changed but it was not likely to happen in this Rotary year.
- VP Alana would present the update Strategic plan to the club at the June 12th meeting.
- President Ted informed the club that they can expect the invoices for the 2017-18 dues to be in their email box this coming week. We are attempting to get them all collected before the start of the 2017-18 year when they immediately become due to RI and District.
- All Director's meeting minutes can be found on our website for Club members interested.
Speaker: The speaker today was Constable Edwin Reynolds from the Truro Police Service who was at the club to talk about the Safe Grad event. CST Reynolds has heading up the CEC Safe Grad event for the past 5 year and is chair of the Safe Grad committee. The event itself has been operated by the Truro Police service since 1989.
He explained how the Safe Grad works. The event has moved around to several locations over the years but is now being held at the RECC where there is a lot of room and many activities for the young people. The event is held the day of Graduation at CEC and runs from 11:00 pm to 5 am. Once in.. no one is allowed to leave.
There is plenty of food and (non alcoholic) beverage, an all night DJ, bouncy castles, the climbing wall, fun and games. In addition there are some really great prizes (flat screens, tablets were mentioned). The total value for the prizes was $10,000. Last year, 85% of grads attended.
Safe Grad depends on the support of local businesses and volunteers. All the food and drink is donated and CST Reynolds thanked organisations like the Rotary Club for their continued support for the event.
Rotarian (and former Police Chief) Ken Maclean thanked CST Reynolds and presented him with a check for $500 as a donation from the Club to the event.
Attendance: 70%
Closing: 1:18 pm
