Bulletin Date

Opening/Chair: Marilyn Brown was the chair today and opened the meeting asking Laurie to lead the group in the singing of O Canada and then asked for a moment of personal reflection.

Visitors/Guests: There were no guests or Rotarian visitors.

Member Health:  Alana shared that past president Ted has reported that his son has been doing much better and while there is still a long road to recovery, he has shown a much better improvement that originally had been predicted.

Happy Mug: There were many happy Rotarians today:
  • Ed MacDonald for a great swim in the lake on Sunday in support of the End Polio Cause.  He had pledges of about $550.
  • Kirk for a great first get away in their new convertible.
  • Judy for a great summer social. She thanked all who helped and especially Richard and Maralyn Bowness for hosting.
  • Jim Gould for the impending birth of yet another grandchild.
  • Joanna for the great summer social.
50/50: Ken MacDonald had the winning ticket but missed the joker and was given the usual sympathy from other members.

Announcements and Reports:
  • Matt announced that the yearbook was coming along nicely and that we were now over 200 signed contacts.  Kirk has over 100 photos uploaded and invoices had already gone out and some paid already.  There were some followups to be done but the new system is working pretty well.
  • Members of the membership committee were asked to gather after the meeting for a brief meeting.
  • Our own Keith Gillis has been highlighted in the local media for his blueberry pie eating prowess.  He competes again this Friday at the opening of the Wild Blueberry Festival.

President's Report:
  • President Alana thanked everyone for their support of the open house at Camp Tidnish and the Pride Parade.  A good time was had by all and it reflects well on the club.
  • She acknowledged and thanked all those who helped and participated in the Swim for Polio (especially Lydia) and the Summer social (especially Judy). Both were excellent events and the spirit seemed to have lifted the member's spirits. Thanks to Richard and Maralyn for opening their home again for the events.
  • Members were advised to make note of the following dates:
    • Sept 17th is the visit of the Rotary Fellowship exchange team from the Finland and Estonia.  There was discussion on how to get as many out to it as possible on a Sunday at lunch time.  It was agreed that a social might work well. Laurie offered to host it at the farm and all approved. Details will follow. Bring all the kids and we'll make it an event.
    • Sept 30th is Bollywood Night a the Holiday Inn. Jim Gould reported more fully on the event in his presentation. Tickets are $55 for Rotarians ($60 for non members) and are available from committee members.  Chefs from Halifax are coming so the meal is going to be a great one. We are hoping for additional revenues this year from sponsorships and increased attendance. Partial proceeds will go to Camp Tidnish and the balance will be for local children's support.
    • Oct 1st is the date for the celebration of 100 years of Rotary on PEI. The Rotary International President Ian Riseley will be there.  Tickets are $75 and Alana has reserved 8 for members and is working on a rate at local hotels.  Car pooling options are being considered.  Let her know if you'd like to go.
    • Oct 28th for the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLi) session to be held in Truro. It is a great way to get to know more about Rotary and is especially recommended for newer Rotarians although it can be helpful for those that have been around a while. More details will follow.
  • Alana thanked everyone for their support.
AG's report: Jim Gould made his official visit to the club in his capacity as Assistant Governor for our region.  In addition to his report on Bollywood (previously reported) he talked about the visit of DG Don Sword on October 23rd.  There will be a meeting of the Directors and committee chairs with the DG at 11:00 and then the meeting with him as speaker at the regular time.

The theme of Don's presentation will be his PIPE dream.  He asks clubs to consider having speakers and doing projects in the areas of Public Image, Peace and Conflict Resolution and the Environment, taking pictures and reporting back. The Rotary Club of Truro is already working in all those areas so is well on the way.  He asked for a good turnout for the DG.

Speaker: Barbara and Jim Goit gave a presentation on their experiences attending the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta.  With 33,000 attendees from 174 countries it was an amazing and inspirational experience.  They were able to connect to many old friends and make some new ones.

They talked about the upcoming Convention in Toronto June 23-27, 2018 and encourage as many to attend as possible. Turnout is expected to be high from our District.

Visit to Camp Tidnish

On Saturday, July 29th, Camp Tidnish celebrated 80 years of offering summer camps to children, youth and adults with physical and/or intellectual disabilities. Brian Matthews, Wayne Gillis and Laurie Sandeson attended the Open House representing the Rotary Club of Truro.

They were pleased to tour the cottages and see first hand the heat pumps that were up and running which our Club helped purchase. It’s a remarkable Camp and a project that the Rotary Club of Truro should be very proud to have supported for many years.
