Oct 16, 2017

Opening/Chair: Rod Jones was the chair for the day.  He asked Alana to lead the group in the singing of O Canada which was followed by the moment of personal reflection.

Visitors/Guests: There were no visitors or guests however there were some Rotarians present we hadn't seen in a while.

Member Health: It was reported that Garth had recently had an operation and was recovering in Halifax.  He would be getting back to the Truro Hospital at some point. We wish he and Trinkie all the best.

Happy Mug: There were a number of happy Rotarians today:
  • Andrew just for being able to attend the meeting today.
  • Alana for a very successful play on the weekend.
  • Jim Gould for a very enjoyable trip to Europe.
  • Brian for a wonderful visit to see his granddaughters.
50/50: Bart had the lucky ticket but missed the joker and the $164 pot.

President's Report and Announcements:

President Alana provided a recap of the latest Directors’ meeting:
  • A plaque has been installed inside the elevator at the RECC, which recognizes our contribution. There was discussion as to whether we should replace the 4 Way Test sign outside the elevator, which would be the Club’s responsibility.
  • Adrian Nauss has advised he is not able to perform the duties of PR Chair, as has now taken a position in Halifax. There was discussion at the Directors’ meeting as to who may be a good replacement, and/or who we may attract from the community as a new member to fill this role.
  • We have received a resignation letter from David MacNaughton, for health reasons. It was decided to allow his membership to run through til June 30 so he will continue to receive the magazine.
  • The Strategic Plan timelines and responsibilities were reviewed at the meeting and there was consensus to proceed as outlined. Alana will circulate by email to the full Club.
  • There were 3 requests for funding: Truro Elementary Field Trip and Truro Tennis Club were both declined as they do not fit our mandate; the third request was for a $10,000 USD eSight machine for Tammy Martin. It was decided we would donate $300 after their fundraiser if still needed, as well as reach out to the Lions Club for their possible assistance.
  • There was great discussion around vocational service and ways to expand our exposure, including wearing our pins or garb when attending community/business events. Tom is going to solicit members who may wish to host a club visit and tour. Another suggestion was to ask yearbook advertisers if they would like to host a club visit as this would help promote yearbook sales and show our members supporting the advertisers.
  • Reminder of DG Don’s visit next Monday, Oct 23 with Directors’ meeting at 11 am, Don as guest speaker for our luncheon meeting, then the Get to Know Rotary members and guests reception at 5:00 pm in the private dining room at the Glengarry. Please share the Facebook event with your friends and invite someone to attend with you.
  • Reminder of RLI taking place next Saturday, Oct 28 at the NSCC. There is still time this week to Register for Parts 1 & 2.  The club will pay the registration fee.  Contact Jim Goit for details if you have questions.  It would be good to have as many as possible from the club attend, particularly newer members.
  • Remember the reception the evening of the 27th at Glengarry (Private Dining Room). Please come out to meet other Rotarians from around the region in an informal setting even if you are not coming to the Saturday session. This replaces the regular October Rotary After Hours. Rotary Fun.
Speaker: There was no speaker as this was a Club assembly.

Get to Know Rotary Evening

The Rotary Club of Truro is hosting a special reception in the private dining room at the Best Western Truro - Glengarry on Monday October 23, 2017 from 5-6:30 pm.

This informal event will give you an opportunity to meet some members of the Rotary Club of Truro and learn more about Rotary and the good work being done in our community. It is also an opportunity to meet the District Governor  Don Sword and his wife Pat and hear about the work of Rotary around the region and the across the world.  They will also help us celebrate World Polio Day on Oct 24th.

All are welcome to this special evening. There is no admission and light snacks will be provided. Bring a friend and find out what it means to be a Rotarian.
