Speaker: Jennifer DeWolfe, Senior Case Worker with Housing NS for Northern Nova Scotia made a presentation today about the various programs that Housing Nova Scotia has to help community members improve their homes.

Jennifer stated that when people have the means to choose the housing that is right for them, they are healthier, happier, and go on to lead more productive lives.  This benefits the whole of society.

Unfortunately, not all Nova Scotians have the ability to afford a home that meets their needs near the support network and services they require. From rising utility costs, increasing rent and other basic life necessities, getting a foot on the property ladder is becoming increasingly difficult.  It is even more challenging for some individuals, such as recent graduates with a large student debt, lone parents, persons with disabilities, existing social housing tenants, and immigrants.

Housing NS strives to ensure that all Nova Scotians can live in a home that’s right for them, at a price they can afford.

Jennifer outlined the programs that Housing NS has available. In particular she mentioned the Emergency Repair Program (ERP) that will help people in Rural Nova Scotia who meet the criteria make repairs to homes up to $6,500. It is typically used to repair heating and plumbing systems.

She also mentioned the Access a home program that helps people adapt homes for people with disabilities. It will do everything from door nobs and bathtubs to access ramps.

The Homeowner Residential Rehabilitation Assistance Programs (RRAP) Forgivable Loan for homes which can provide up to $18,0000, was of interest to many.  It is designed to do major repairs (such as roofs and electrical) to make homes livable and secure for people.  There is more of a process to go through for this type of program but it is worthwhile to consider for people who meet the criteria.

There were several questions from the Rotarians at the meeting and Jennifer encouraged us to refer people we might know who could benefit to consider these programs.  The Department's website has much more information on the programs.

Jennifer was thanked by Jane.

Attendance: 60% after makeups.

Closing: 1:14 pm.

Rotarians Celebrate 100 Years of the Rotary Foundation

There was a great turnout to the May edition of Rotary After Hours on Thrusday May 25th  when Truro Rotarians celebrated the 100th Birthday of the Rotary Foundation.  A quick game of Rotary Foundation Trivia was played followed by a special birthday cake which was enjoyed by all.   We even sang (some would call it singing) Happy Birthday to the Foundation.

Join us for RAH next month.  It's the last Thrusday of June at 5:15 pm.

Adopt a Highway clean-up
The Annual Adopt a Highway clean-up was held Saturday May 27th. The group of 11 hardy Rotarians met at the Canadian Tire parking lot at 9 am and then moved over to the Hwy 102 / Robie Street interchange to collect all the paper and plastic they could.  The NS Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal provided the vests and bags and picked up the bags from the roadside.

While it was cloudy, overcast and on the cool side, the Rotarians collected approximately 25 bags of trash. There was consensus that this was down from previous years which is a good thing.  In addition to the beer cans, coffee containers and car parts the group usually picks up, the most interesting find was the pregnancy test kit and the empty birth control container found a short distance from one another.

Thanks to everyone for this community service.
