Announcements and Reports:

President Alana provided the following report on the Feb 6th Director's meeting.
  • Continue to work towards a district grant application for outdoor musical instruments.
  • Group discussed adjusting the weekly meeting format, with the guest speaker to be up first, before the club business. New meeting schedules now printed off for noontime and suppertime meetings.
  • The 2017-2018 organizational chart is now completed. Some hard copies printed and you will all find it in your email when you check it after the meeting. Thank you again to Lech & Marilyn for driving this.
  • The mini fridge and freezer has been found! They were living in Al Begin’s out building. To be picked up by Adam and Ryan.
  • Rotary week plans are coming along well. Tentative agenda includes:
    • Monday: flag raising at town hall.
    • Tuesday: possible tour of Rotary house, and/or Reception 5:00-6:30pm in Sherlock’s
    • Wednesday: possible hands on activity at Food Bank
    • Thursday: Charter Night, guest speaker Maggie MacDonnell, 2017 Global Teacher Prize
    • Friday: RYLA, and possible tour of Rotary House
    • Saturday: possible tree planting, Community Booth at Farm Market
  • Community:
    • Request from CALA for smart tv, Lech to get more information
    • Request from Alex Chaisson to attend Camp Brigadoon in March, $850 approved.
  • International: request from Bill Adshade for assistance with electoral observance in El Salvador. Matt to follow up for more details and may donate up to $300.
  • Membership: Andrea Jackson from CCU and Jim Harman have been approved for membership; their names will appear in the Bulletin this week, with inductions to take place February 26.
  • Discussion around cost of Charter Night tickets; decision was to increase to $60 tax in per person. This was for a number of reasons, including increased costs for audio visual, transportation for the speaker, to cover cost of comp tickets (+/- 23 this year), and to assist with costs in future years if we do not have a sponsor for the event. As attending Charter Night is an expectation of being a member, the board felt that members would still support and attend. At the Charter Night committee meeting the following day, there was a suggestion that each member should be expected to sell 2 tickets to the event, other than their own, and all those who do will be entered into a draw to win the cost of their tickets.
  • Super excited about guest speaker Maggie MacDonnell.  Alana showed a video about her work in the north.
  • Wayne Gillis reported on behalf of the club Recognition committee that was meeting after the club meeting.  They were encouraging members to make nominations for Rotarian of the Year, Avenues of Service and the Community Service Award.  See the Club website for details on these awards.
  • Jim Gould reported on the TLC session scheduled for Saturday Feb 17th. Five members of our club were registered.  There is still an opportunity to come. Another message will be coming out.
New Member Proposals: The following individuals have been proposed for membership and approved by the board of directors:
  • Jim Harman.  Jim is a Rotarian, formerly with the South Hampton Rotary Club in Ontario.  He is a retired school teacher who relocated to our area a couple of months ago and has visited the club several times. Jim's sponsor is Jim Goit
  • Andrea Jackson has been Branch Manager Community Credit Union Truro since 2017. Before that she as with CEED (Center for Entrepreneur Development) in Halifax and the Nova Scotia Cooperative Council in Turro. Andrea's sponsor is Wayne Gillis
Member Health: It was reported that Clyde was recovering from illness and that Barbie's other knee was acting up and preventing her from coming out to the meeting.  She thanked those who had offered drives.

Happy Mug: There were several Happy Rotarians tonight:
  • Kirk Saint daughter had recently became engaged.
  • Matt had spent a great weekend with NSCC and Dal AC students at the Cultiv8ag  pitch session.
  • Jean Morris had just gotten a new job.
  • Alana Hirtle had also been at the Cultiv8ag but had also gone to a great Valentines dinner and dance.
  • Jim Gould had gone to see Jim Cuddy concert in Halifax
  • Jim Harman had had a positive experience with the NS Health Care System
50/50:  Jim Gould has the lucky ticket (the second time in 6 years he said) and he came up with the Joker taking home the $11 pot.

Closing: 6:35 pm
