Kevin also indicated that newly inducted members receive $100 to be given to a charity of choice. Members travelling south to developing countries can obtain $100 for humanitarian aid.
Judy Nicholson has 24 members signed up for the sleigh/wagon ride for Friday. If you wish to participate, let Judy know by Tuesday, Jan 31st. Meet at Hamilton’s Farm at 6:30 pm – 12589 Hwy #2, Lower Onslow. If paying by cheque, make the $25/person payable to Judy since she will pay the total bill. If cash, please bring exact change.
Speaker: Judy introduced guest speaker, Megan Rutherford. Megan is an employee of the Best Western Glengarry. She began by noting that 1 in 4 women in North America have been sexually abused at some point in their lifetime. There’s a cycle of substance abuse, unplanned pregnancies, rape, etc that is very difficult to break out of without some form of intervention. She encourages people to talk openly about the issues in their communities. Megan shared her heart-wrenching story of her own experience with sexual abuse. She is now a single mother of a healthy 7 year old boy who finally received support and began a new chapter in her life. However, it took a care centre in her community to ask what it could do to help. Megan says “We need to be everybody’s village”.
Megan is asked to speak at numerous events. She has helped launch a housing project and is happy to see that Truro has a Womens Resource Support Centre. It requires continued support from the community as well.
Marilyn Brown thanked Megan for her courage in telling her story and for the work she continues to do to encourage others to speak out.
50/50: Sharon Corcoran was unsuccessful in her attempt to find the Joker.
The Rotary Club of Truro is looking for young people in Colchester County to take part in the Adventure in Citizen Program.
The Adventure in Citizenship program brings together a select group of 200 students from across Canada to learn about Canadian democratic institutions through meetings with political leaders, senior officials and each other. The Rotary Club of Truro will participate in the program again this year and encourages 16 -18 year old high school students in Colchester County to apply. The Club will pay for the selected candidate to fly to Ottawa and attend the program.
Our application process calls for a short essay (approx. 250 words) or a 30-90 second creative video on “What does being a Canadian citizen mean to you?“
The deadline for application to the Rotary Club of Truro is Feb 13. Send completed essays or videos to trurorotary@gmail.com by Feb 13.
Share the post on the clubs Facebook page and refer as many young people that you know (or there parents) to the program.
The District Conference website (http://7820conference.com) is now open and early registration is encouraged. There looks to be a great program in the Annapolis Valley.
The Club was pleased to induct Adrian Nauss as a member of the Rotary Club of Truro.
Adrian is manager of the local branch of RBC. He comes to Truro with considerable Rotary experience as he was previously a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor where he had reached the position of Club vice president before coming to Truro.
