Opening/Chair: Barbara Goit was our chair today and she asked Alana to lead the group in the singing of O Canada. This was followed by a moment where we might reflect on all the blessings we have on this momentous day.
Visitors/Guests: Our speaker Emma Tool was the only guest today.
Member Health: No report.
Happy Mug: There was an extra large number of happy Rotarians today including:
- Christine for a successful Highland Games.
- Alana for being back to Rotary and for an upcoming play she will be in.
- Joanna for her son's success in Soccer
- Kevin for his two newest grand sons and for seeing moose in action
- Keith who had a great move for his store and an upcoming grand opening
- Jane for the first day at school for her youngest son
- Lydia for progress with school rebuilding
- Barbara for a great visit by all the family for her mom's 95th
50/50: Christine had the lucky ticket but the joker eluded her so the $124 pot will continue to build. You will want to be sure to be there next week and get your tickets. You know you can buy more than one.
Announcements and Reports:
- Wayne reported on the Colchester Community Workshops annual Golf tournament to be held on September 14th. The club has entered one team this year and there was still time to support the golfers with your donation (Contact Wayne or other golfers). There were several Rotarians who would be helping out at the event rather that playing but more would be welcome.
- Jane updated the group on Bollywood evening being held September 30th. Ticket sales were going well and sponsorship was exceeding expectations. If Rotarians still have unsold tickets they should get them in to Barbara Goit as soon as possible for redistribution. Money for sold tickets should be turned in as well. She also needs to know if there were tables sold, who they went to what ticket numbers. Volunteers are needed to help with the event. Let Jane know if you can help and please be at the Holiday Inn at 4:30.
- Judy gave an update on the Fall Farm Social & Reception for the Rotary Friendship Exchange team from Estonia and Finland being held Sunday Sept 17th. Approximately 30 had indicated they were coming so far but she encouraged others to register. Another invitation was sent out. She solicited help with food and drink from those who had indicated they were coming. It's going to be a fun time.
President's Report: President Alana gave a brief report on the discussions and decisions made at the September 5th Director's meeting.
- Strategic Plan update – Executive met to put some deadlines and responsibilities around tasks in plan; Alana has circulated to Exec and will forward to board shortly. Hope to present to full group in October.
- Board has agreed to trial run a consent agenda format for the next 3 months; goal is to tighten up meeting time and have more focused conversations
- Directors received a report on the Bollywood event noting the ticket sales and sponsorship.
- Alana will follow up with Matt Moore at the RECC regarding the elevator which we sponsored in 2012; there is an Advocate Print cling ad covering the door.
-

Club Chair has suggested changing one Monday lunch meeting to a Monday supper meeting. Will be reaching out to individual members for input before bringing to entire group to discuss.
- The International Committee - Matt secured further information from Kumbo re the project and re-allocation of funds. Motion passed to re-allocate funds within the project as Lydia had requested, pending confirmation from the Rotary Club in Kumbo of the work already completed.
- The membership committee was planning a "get to know Rotary" event for the late afternoon of Oct 23rd to take advantage of the visit of DG Don Sword. More details to follow but this will be an opportunity to invite potential Rotarians to get to know us better. Think of someone you think would make a good Rotarian.
- Charter Night planning continuing. A request has gone out via Les to Bob Winters for keynote speaker. Remember it will be during Rotary Week this time. (April 19, 2018)
Speaker: The speaker this week was Emma Toole, CEC grade 12 student and the club's Adventures in Citizenship recipient.
Emma is one busy young person. Her sports include soccer, track, curling and skiing. She is interested in travel so was away this summer on an exchange program with Japanese students. She is active on student Council and volunteers with both the Hospital and at Shannex. She works several jobs including being a ski Instructor at Ski Wentworth in the winter and behind the counter at Masstown Market and Party Time Rentals in the summer.
Emma also participated in the Club's RYLA event in the Spring and is currently working towards the requirements for the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
Dispute all this, Emma says that academics come first and everything else second.
Emma traveled as part of the annual Adventure in Citizenship program hosted by the Rotary Club of Ottawa. Our club has sponsored a participant for many years. She joined about 200 other young people from all across Canada who converged on Ottawa last May for 3 days of excitement. She stayed with three other participants with a host family in Ottawa and developed some lifelong friends.
Emma said that the highlights of the adventure included a visit to the Canadian War Museum where they got to interact with veterans and hear their story. She also got to go on a tour of the parliament building and even sit in our MP's seat! (Bill wasn't there). She also observed the Citizenship ceremony for several new Canadians and was moved by the process that others go through to get what we take for granted... the right to call ourselves Canadian.
In conclusion, Emma thanked the Rotary club for sponsoring her for this unique experience. She said her mind was opened to many new ways of thinking about Canada and what makes this country what it is.
Mark Mason thanked Emma and presented her with a token our appreciation.
