June 19, 2017 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: Ken MacDonald was in the chair today and asked Alana lead the group in the singing of O Canada.  This was followed with a moment of personal reflection.

Visitors/Guests: There were no Rotarian guests today however Robert Shea was Alana's guest and Richard introduced Roger Ryan.

Member Health: Alana reported that she has spoken to Laurie and passed along her Rotary family's encouraging thoughts and prayers. She went on to report that President Ted's son had been struck by a car and was currently in the hospital in a coma.

Happy Mug: There were several Happy Rotarians:
  • Lydia about recent news that a person she had met on a mission several years ago and helped to attend the NSAC had recently graduated with his PhD.
  • Kevin who had helped a neighbor and scored a house sitter for while they were away.
  • Barbara for the RI convention in Atlanta that she and Jim had just attended.
  • Ryan who had enjoyed a great father's day.
  • Marilyn for a lovely (hot) vacation in Florida. She claims to now by officially homeless.
  • Jane for a successful run across the Confederation Bridge.  She raised $1,600 for the IWK.
  • Mark who will be meeting with an Acadia classmate who was his best man and who is returning to NS for a visit.
50/50: Jim Goit had the lucky ticket (again) but missed the joker and the $65.00 pot. There was the usual sympathetic groan made.

Announcements and Reports:
  • Alana reported that the June Rotary After Hours will be this Thursday (22nd) at the Best Western Glengarry. There will be fun and frivolity. Please join us at 5:15pm.
  • Alana reminded members about the semi annual meeting next Monday.
  • Joanna asked for extra help to move tables and chairs from her barn to Adam's office. There were volunteers.
  • Lech reminded the group that the deadline for the yearbook is now!  Please complete the solicitations as soon as possible.  If there are some with capacity to do a few more please let him know.
  • Martina reported that three bursary winners had been selected and she was looking for people to make the presentations at CEC, Colchester North and South Colchester Academy.  Several people stepped forward.
  • A list asking for meeting chairs was circulated and people were offered first opportunity to chair at a time of their choosing.  It was filling up fast.

Rod Jones Receives Paul Harris +4
As he was away at the time of the annual Charter night celebration, Rotarian Rod Jones was presented his Paul Harris +4 recognition pin at the Club's June 19th regular meeting.

The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, US$1,000 to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. For each additional $1,000 gifted, the multiple number +1  to 9 is added until the Rotarian reaches Major donor status at $10,000.

Established in 1957, the PHF is used to show appreciation for and encourage substantial contributions to what was then the Foundation’s only program, Rotary Foundation Fellowships for Advanced Study, the precursor to Ambassadorial Scholarships.

Thank you Rod for your generosity to the Rotary Foundation.

Shown in the photo are Ken MacDonald (Recognition Committee), Kevin Quinlan (2017 Charter Night Chair) and Rod Jones.

Club Presents 2016-17 Community Service Award
Roger Ryan is the 2016-17 recipient of the Rotary Club of Truro's Community Service Award.

The Community Service Award goes each year to a non-Rotarian within Truro or Colchester County who has provided outstanding service through volunteer work and financial commitment to organizations or individuals in need. This year’s recipient is Roger Ryan. He and his wife Barbara took over Ryan’s IGA from is father Jack in 1976. Ryan’s IGA was one of the “go-to” businesses in Truro for community groups, sports teams, and service clubs…..nobody ever left Ryan’s IGA empty handed.

Congratulations Roger.
