Opening/Chair: RotarianKen Banks was chair for the day. (Editors note: It was his first time doing this task and he did great) He asked Alana to lead the group in the singing of O Canada and then he asked the group to join him in a moment of reflection and thanks.
Visitors/Guests: Christopher Harrison from Bakewell, Uk was a visiting Rotarian today. He came with Rotarian Ken MacLean.
Christopher described his club of 35 members and the area where he lived. He was most impressed with our Community Yearbook initiative and would be taking that idea home with him
Welcome Christopher. We are always glad to see visitors.
Member Health: No report.
Happy Mug: There were a number of Happy Rotarians today.
Audrie-Jo who had taken a group of her students to PEI and had gotten "carded" with them. She reported her mom had told her it was for a possible seniors discount. We all know otherwise.
Ken MacDonald who had been their daughter's wedding in Toronto.
Kevin who was leaving soon for 3 weeks in Ethiopia on assignment with CESO.
Marilyn who had a great story about getting lost in Bermuda and receiving help from a random stranger who turned out to be originally from Truro. Small world.
50/50: President Alana had the winning ticket but the elusive joker and the $143 pot eluded her. There was the usual expression of sympathy from the club.
Announcements and Reports:
Richard announced that he had some leftover backpacks from the golf Tournament. He quickly found homes for them.
Kirk reminded everyone who needed an new official Rotary picture taken, that he would be doing that next week.
President's Report:
Alana reported that the preparations for the Bollywood evening that was being held this coming Saturday were going well. The team had worked hard and there would be 20 silent auction items on offer as well as 140 balloons (all with prizes) for the blitz to be sold for the fund raiser. When she asked for help with the blitz a number of Rotarians offered.
Alana also reminded members about registering for RLI that was being held in Truro on October 28th. She especially encouraged newer members to sign up for the event. The club would pay the registration fees for members who attended. If there are questions contact Jim Goit. The link to registration and details about the Rotary Leadership Institute can be found on the District Website.
Speaker: Our speaker for the day had to suddenly cancel so instead Kevin introduced the group to a TED Talk that he was familiar with and highly recommended.
The talk was given by RobertWaldinger, a Psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and Zen priest. He is the Director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the most comprehensive longitudinal studies in history.
His talk highlighted the result of the 75 years of study of over 700 people throughout their lives in an effort to better understand health and happiness. The major finds of the still ongoing effort was that good relationships are the key to both happiness and health and the more that we develop and work on them as individuals, the longer and better our lives will be.
While it may seem intuitive, he reported that loneliness affected 20% of the population in the US and was growing as a health concern.
The recommendation is to lean into the relationships you have with family, friends and community.
Kirk will be taking Rotarian head and shoulder photos at the October 2nd club meeting. These photos will be used for the Community Yearbook.
Newer member who have not had your picture taken or others who want to change the one they have, please make sure to come to the meeting on the Oct 2nd.
