Sept 18, 2017

Opening/Chair: Mark Mason was chair today and he asked Laurie to lead the group in the singing of O Canada.  This was followed by the usual moment of personal reflection.

Visitors/Guests:  There were no Rotarian visitors.  Darlene Stevenson from the Truro office of ACOA was a guest of President Alana.  Our speaker, Joanne Thibeau - Director of the Boys and  Girls Clubs of Truro and Colchester was also our guest today

Member Health: No report.

Happy Mug:
  • Kirk because he had just taken the last picture for the Community Yearbook.
  • Sharon was doubly happy.  She had won a Golf trip in a lottery and she and Lloyd split the 50/50 at the Colchester Community Workshops Golf tournament.
  • Judy was happy for the successful Fall Social.  She thanked all those who helped especially Kirk and Tom for running the BBQs and Mike and Laurie for the use of their home.  The club thanks Judy for her work in organizing the event.
  • Tom for a great social.  He went home with a new kitten!
  • Brian for a his mother and her brothers and sisters who all got together for a reunion recently.  The ages ranged from about 85 to 95 and flying was involved.
  • Jim Gould was happy for a recent visit to meet his newest grandson Fletcher, purportedly the handsomest boy in Ontario.
50/50: Wayne Gillis had the lucky ticket but could not find the joker so the $135 pot continues to build.

Announcements and Reports:
  • Kirk announced that he would be set up to take pictures of members at the meeting on October 2nd.  Pictures are for new members or for others would want updates. The pictures are used in the Community Yearbook as well as member profiles on the website.
  • Wayne Gillis provided a report on the Colchester Community Workshops Foundation Golf Tournament.
    • A successful Charity Golf Tournament was completed on Thursday Sep. 14th by the Colchester Community Workshop Foundation.  This fundraiser is named after our Rotary Club, and is in recognition of the financial support and “in kind” support that our Club has provided and continues to provide to the Workshop.
    • 16 golf teams participated, and Workshop clients, staff, directors, volunteers and Rotarians assisted during the day.
    • Rotary Volunteers (4).  Alana Hirtle, Kevin Quinlan, Lloyd Coady, and Lydia Sorflaten were valuable volunteers during the day, and helped raise the Rotary profile.
    • Rotary Golf Team (5).  We fielded 1 team this year, consisting of: Brian Matthews, Kirk Saint, Laurie Sandeson, Richard Bowness and Wayne Gillis.  I think our score was “5 under”, which was “way behind” the winning team’s score of “17 under”.  Nevertheless, our Team had fun, and we raised over $1,600 in pledges.
    • Other Rotarian Golfers (4).  Paul Clarke, Sharon Corcoran, Mike Dolter, and Dave Mills golfed on other teams.
    • Lloyd and Sharon won the 50/50 raffle of $127.
    • $29,000 gross revenues generated for the day, including our $5,000 Rotary Club sponsorship.
    • Special thanks to the 13 Rotarians who helped this worthy cause.
  • Secretary Lech was taking names for those who needed new name tags.  He already had several but if you need one or need an update let him know.
President's Report: President Alana also briefly reported on the golf tournament and fall social and thanked all those involved.  She showed off the club banners that she had picked up from the clubs from Estonia and that would be added to our inventory.

The president also called immediate past president Ted Jordan to come forward and she presented him with the past president's pin.

Speaker: Our speaker for the day was Joanne Thibeau, Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Truro and Colchester.   Joanne has lived to the Truro area all her life other then for her time away at University. She has been with the Boys and Girls Clubs  since about 2003 in one way or another and has a real passion for the organization.

Joanne outlined some of the history of the Boys and Girls club in Truro having been started in 1964 by the Truro Police department to provide recreational diversion for the young boys in the hope of reducing juvenile delinquency and vandalism in the town.  The project was so successful that it has grown to include many many programs and over 500 members from all walks of life, irrespective of race, background or family status. The overall Mission is to provide safe, supportive places where children and youth can experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships, and develop confidence and skills for life.

The various programs were identified, the main one being the after school program. This is a valuable program to help young people with physical activity, socialization skills, food security issues and general confidence building.  A full list of programs for the Boys and Girls Club can be found on their website. http://www.bgctruro.ca/   Their new facility on Douglas street allows for many more activities in a very positive environment.

Joanne outlined trends she was seeing in her time with the organization.  More children were coming to the program hunger and there seems to be more issues with children with behavior problems and poor coping skills.

The priorities for the organization is for a replacement for their school bus that needs ongoing repair and for increased training for staff and volunteers who work with the children.

Joanne answered several questions from club members and then was thanked by Dr. Kevin Quinlan who related his positive personal experience with the Boys Club when he was growing up.

Field Report GG1530060, Cameroon, Africa
Three members of the Rotary Club of Kumbo visited the site of the repair of the school in Befang to inspect progress on this part of  GG1530060.
Ibrahim Yaouba, President of the Rotary Club of Kumbo (host club),  submitted the report below to the Rotary Club of Truro (International Club).

Pictures taken on site Sept 13th, 2017 were taken by Mme Oussematou, Director of Integrated Development Foundation.

Field Report  GG1530060  by Ibrahim Yaouba  Rotary Club of Kumbo, Cameroon, Africa

The field visit began on the 13th September 2014 and lasted two days with a stop in Bamenda due to bad roads at this time of the year.  Three members of the Rotary Club of Kumbo, the host club for the project, Ibrahim Yaouba, Edward Lailam and Divine Ntani took off for this field visit in order to get fresh and real situation of the progress of this GG on the ground

After a long journey, we arrived Befang on the 14th Septerber after noon, we were welcomed by IDF coordinator Mme Oussematou Demani and president Joseph Tafrie, Head Teacher of the school (P.S Befang) and some technicians. We sat for a brief meeting before taking are tour round the school to visit project site.

Activities on the ground:

  • 3 classrooms and 1 office are under construction, while 15 out of the 60 benches previewed for the project have been assembled already while the rest will be assembled soon
  • Some changes were made in the course of the project: 1 classroom has been added to host the nursery section and also 1 office for the teachers
  • Other materials have been bought and kept and will be used to complete the buildings
  • The training has been halted due to schools shut down but will resume as soon as the political unrest is over

Proposal

We discovered that the wash hand station for the project could be replaced with some equipment for the nursery sector now that they have a classroom which was not included in the original project. The school has a wash station from the latrines that were constructed by Rotary in a related grant. However this is still a proposal until approved by Rotary.

Training:

The agric or farming training will take place soon and shall include as beneficiaries the PTA of the school amongst may be six community health workers and why not some members of the community. This will however be at the discretion of IDF. The general targeted beneficiaries are the training of trainers which will go a long where to sustain parents in sponsoring their children to school as well as increase family income and improve living standards within the community

Future projects of the school:

  • We also discovered that a library and a computer (ICT) center are needed in the future. This will go a long way to help the children get in to the global world technology by seeing, touching and operating a computer which is still a luxury in most rural communities in Africa
  • The meeting ended at about 3 pm with Ibrahim making a closing statement as follows
  • First of all thanked IDF and P.S Befang team for the warm welcome
  • He also took some time to brief the people present on Rotary and the objectives of the project and the wish to see the children enjoy the structures put in place judiciously
  • The PTA should be educated on the importance of maintenance of the buildings while children thought how to manage them with care for sustainability
  • The Rotary Club of Kumbo was also happy to hear WASH solutions are implemented within the school curriculum since the previous Rotary project of latrines and a wash station.
  • Most importantly Ibrahim advised IDF on the importance of communication with both the host and international partners during project implementation, any changes should be communicated in advance before implementation while regular contacts with Rotary will be excellent for a more successful project and the future.

Observations:

  • Kumbo RC observed with satisfaction the ongoing activities of this project on the ground
  • We will be ready to help in the PTA training on the management and sustainability of the buildings during handing over if need be
  • We encouraged the ICT and library aspect of this project,
  • IDF is also planning a training on income savings for parents to pay fees for their children with ease and provide other school needs for their children (this is also a good initiative)
  • The training can start as soon as IDF is ready
