Announcements and Reports:
President's Report: President Ted reminded everyone that the next directors's meeting would be Tuesday, May 2nd at the Colchester Community Workshops Rotary House. Everyone Welcome.
Speaker: Truro Mayor Bill Mills was the speaker for the day. He started off by saying that the town had had a great year and he thanked Rotary for helping make it that way. He acknowledge the role that the Rotary club has in the community.
Bill has seen a lot of changes during his 20 years as mayor of the Town of Truro. The infrastructure and services of the town had changed and improved, particularly so in the last few years. He mentioned that there had been a lot of big projects in the past number of years that had been completed and were now in full use. He particularly highlighted the new Library, the civic square project, the Stanfield's Long John Festival, and the recently announced changes to the RECC. All these events and facilities were all having a major impact on life in our community.
He reported that he was hopeful that the Regional Enterprise Network (REN) would soon become active as a followup for CORDA, which we had been well served by.
Mayor Bill credited the great partnerships with the County of Colchester and it's Mayor, Rotarian Christian Blair, for a lot of the advancements that have happened. There was also a new generation of entrepreneur in the region that was responsible for the revitalization of business in town. He reported that the new building projects designed to increase the number of people living downtown were going to further enhance development of the core area of Truro.
The Mayor reported that the $27M town budget for the coming year would highlight maintenance of current assets (roads and sidewalks) and smaller important projects that were needed. The Gateway project at the old Palliser site and the Willow Street Roundabout were mentioned as projects awaiting approvals and senior Government support.
In summary the Mayor said that we have some great assets in Truro and we should be proud to live and work here.
Rotarian Matt Redmond (left in the picture below) along with chair Tom Savary thanked Major Mills on behalf the club.
