USED MEDICAL EQUIPMENT TO AFRICA

Earlier this Spring, Rotarian Lloyd Coady, Chair of the Equipment Sub-Committee advised that he had access to some used medical equipment.

Through his joint work with the Royal Canadian Legion in Truro, in providing medical equipment to families in need locally, Lloyd was aware that the Legion had surplus medical equipment including beds, chairs, wheelchairs and walkers that they no longer used.  Lloyd had previously discussed with the Legion that our Rotary District 7820 had shipped several container loads of used medical equipment to villages in Africa.

In May, contact was made with PDG Pete Smith in Cape Breton, who co-ordinates the Rotary District 7820 container shipments.  Pete advised of their immediate requirements, and on June 1st, Lloyd, Bill from the Legion and I, loaded 3 wheelchairs and 40 walkers into a cargo van.  The items were transported to a Sobey's warehouse in Halifax that evening to be added to equipment already stored for the June container shipment.  The container was loaded on June 2nd.  Sometime in the next several weeks, we should hear on the the final destination for the items.

PDG Pete is aware that our Rotary Club has access to additional medical equipment through the local Legion's excess medical equipment inventory.
