TDCoC Names Recipients of 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award

Two very familiar names in the Truro/Colchester business community have been chosen as the recipients of the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the Truro and District Chamber of Commerce and the Business Development Bank of Canada. The award honours a lifetime of commitment to the local business and charitable communities.

The first winner in 2012 is Lorne MacDougall, who spent 66 years actively practising law in Nova Scotia. Despite retiring from active practise in 2010, MacDougall –who is now in his 90s – can usually be found in his office at Burchell MacDougall in Truro every weekday. MacDougall has been involved with many community based and charitable organizations throughout his life and has served as president with the Truro Rotary Club, Community Concert Association, Children’s Aid, CNIB and the Canadian Arthritic and Rheumatism Society. He was also Chair of the Colchester Hospital Commission during the construction of the soon-to-be replaced Colchester Regional Hospital on Willow Street in Truro when it was built in the 1960s. MacDougall has served as a board member or chair with countless other organizations throughout his career. In 1988, he received the Weldon Award from the Dalhousie Law School Alumni Association for unselfish practise throughout his career.

The 2nd winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2012 is Jim Cameron, who spent 50 years as a Chartered Accountant and trusted business advisor for many in the Colchester region. A retired partner with PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Cameron continued to provide advice to the Colchester Business Community and mentoring for CAs articling in the Truro office right up until his sudden passing earlier this month. He was nominated for the award before his death. A family member will be accepting on his behalf. Cameron, who was in his 70s, was actively involved in numerous community-focused and charitable organizations throughout his life including Rotary Club, local Boy Scouts, Colchester Regional Hospital Foundation, First United Church, United Way of Colchester and several others.

While the award is generally designed for one winner, the scoring system used by the judges produced a tie this year between two very deserving people. It was decided to keep it that way. Judges are members of the business faculty at the Nova Scotia Community College in Truro and the Nova Scotia Agricultural College in Bible Hill. The awards will be presented to Mr. McDougall and Mr. Cameron’s family during the Truro and District Chamber of Commerce’s 122nd Annual Dinner, taking place Thursday, March 22nd at the Best Western Glengarry.
