Books fly to Jamaica

The Canada-Jamaica Literacy Exchange Program continues.  Mary Burey, born in Jamaica, visits the schools in Jamaica where the books send.  In a return visit this November, Mary takes 50 more books in her suitcase; this time to be donated to an 'early school' in Jamaica.
Although born and raised in Jamaica, Mary Burey has made Halifax her home and base for a varied academic and people oriented life time of commitment to helping others.  When she heard that the Rotary Club of Truro had sent a shipment of over 4000 books to Jamaica, she hired a driver to take her over the mountains in Jamaica to visit the schools where the books had been distributed.

Later, she brought us photos that showed some of the schools where the books were placed. We were pleased to learn that the Dept of Education in Jamaica had set up a writing contest for school age children.   This included a special fair day to award the winners a gift book.  The books sent by Rotary were distributed to schools in the BrownTown area of Jamaica.

Mary divides her time between Halifax and Jamaica.  Recently, she contacted the Rotary Club of Truro indicating that she would like to take 50 paper back books to Jamaica for an 'early school' she sponsors.   At Rotary House, workers were set in action and a box of books was assembled to arrive in Jamaica just one week later.

The message we would like to leave with you is: if you or someone you know is travelling to a developing country and would like to take a special gift to a nursery school, school or library, contact the Rotary Club of Truro to set this in action.  Ideally, it is best to give a few days notice and to specify the age group or special interest of the group that the books will be used for.  The Colchester Community Workshop chooses appropriate books and places a label, 'Donated by the Rotary Club of Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada' in each book

Books are the quietest and most constant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest of counselors, and the most patient of teachers.
