The Rotary Club of Truro celebrated its 85th Anniversary and Rotary International’s Charter Night on Monday, February 21, 2011.

Guest speaker for the evening was the Honourable Darrell Dexter, Premier of Nova Scotia, who addressed the issue of health care in the province.

Awards for the evening included the Paul Harris Fellowship which is a recognition award for members who have contributed at least $1,000 US to Rotary International.  Recipients this year were Richard Bowness (multiple), Marilyn Brown, Sharon Corcoran, Ernest Bradley (multiple), Rod Jones, Leslie Mosher (multiple), Arnold Hagen, Brian Matthews and Ken MacLean.

Rotarian of the Year is offered by the club to recognize outstanding service to the club in a given year.  This year’s recipient was Judy Nicholson.  Judy joined the Truro club in 2007.  Since then she has been very involved in our fundraising efforts through the auction and yearbook, on the Board of Directors, and in charge of Community Service.

The Avenues of Service Citation is one of the most prestigious awards presented to a Rotarian through Rotary International for distinguished service in all areas of Rotary service.  This year’s recipient of this lifetime achievement award is Riley Marshall.  Riley has been in Rotary for 47 years and has, on many occasions, gone beyond the call in the service he has provided to this club and to Rotary International.

The Community Service Award is a special award offered by the Rotary Club of Truro in recognition of exceptional community service to an individual within our community who is not a member of Rotary.  This year’s recipients are Violet and Allen Large.  Violet and Allen won $11.27 million in an Atlantic Lottery 649 lotto, and subsequently gave $11 million of their winnings to a large number of organizations and charities throughout the community.

All worth recipients, congratulations to each of you!

Thank you to the Truro Concert Band which provided music during the meet and greet, to President Ken MacLean, MC, under whose guidance the evening was entertaining, well organized and successful, and to everyone who attended and made the evening such a success.
