Lydia reported on the swim for Polio on Sunday. She thanked all those that participated. Pledges and money were still coming in. A more detailed story with photos follows.
Jim Goit announced the Biking for Polio challenge that had been issued by Luke MacDonald of the Rotary Club of Halifax Harbourside. He had accepted the challenge of donating $5 every time he wares his Rotary Jersey while biking. As a weak swimmer this is an alternative to supporting the Club's Swim. Any donation to the End Polio Now Cause is important.
Larry reported that the Yearbook subscribers were up about 20 compared to last year. There were still a few more to get get done but he thanked everyone for their hard work. In Particular the Yearbook committee thanked Rotarian Lloyd Cody for going "Above and Beyond" in his work on the Yearbook and Dave Mills presented LLoyd a Rotary Jacket with his name stitched on it as a token of appreciation.

President's Report: President Ted welcomed our guest Shirley and thanked everyone for the efforts for the Swim for Polio.
Speaker: Shirley Xu was the featured speaker for the day. Shirley was a former Truro Interactor and the club had supported her on a project to build a school in Kenya.
She described her trip and the impact it had not only on the community where she worked but also on her personally. She will be attending the University of Toronto in the fall and is already been actively looking for opportunities to serve with groups there who have an international focus.
The Polio Swim Challenge continues in support of Rotary International's Global Polio Eradication Initiative. Shortts Lake Sunday morning August 7th seven swimmers accompanied by a kayak and two boats made their way across the lake. Pledges are coming in. One team has $800 in pledges! Other people are finding unique ways to support the Polio Challenge. Pictured here, ready for the swim, are Laurie Sandeson, Ted Jordan, Lydia Sorflaten, Les Mosher, Chester MacPhee and Richard Bowness. We were joined by Jacqueline MacPhee, Trish Toole and Louisa Sorflaten to swim across the lake.
‘The Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a public-private partnership that includes Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world. Rotary’s focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building.’
The Third "Swim for Polio" Shortt's Lake Sunday was held, August 7th at 10 am.
Two years ago we raised $3000 which, when matched with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation support, amounted to over $13,000 to Rotary International to help in our continued fight against polio. Last year our total raised by the sponsored swimmers was $825. ' Every dollar Rotary commits to polio... three dollars, thanks to a 2-to-1 match from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation' so $825 became $2475.
Re Donations for Polio:
All donations go to: (please indicate Polio Swim)
Rotary Club of Truro PO Box 115, Truro, NS B2N 5B6 (Les Mosher is our treasurer)
PS. Stella Roy, past District Governor, has participated in several National Immunization Days. Stella's three articles show the reality of the need to protect children against Polio in such challenging situations.
Luke MacDonald is a Rotarian with the Rotary Club of Halifax Harbourside. He donates $5.00 to Rotary Foundation's End Polio Now campaign each time he wears his Rotary cycling jersey on a ride and he has challenged other Rotarians to do the same.
PDG Jim Goit wears his jersey on almost all his rides and has picked up the challenge by doing the same and making a donation to the Rotary Foundation. At the Rotary Club of Truro's Monday he announced that he has completed 32 rides and there are two and a half months of biking season left!
The Jerseys also help promote Rotary in the community. This is a photo of PDG Jim with Rotarian Ron Zwaagstra on a recent ride around the Aspotogan loop.
