Committee Reports:
Ted - Coors One Horse Town has approached us to be the volunteer club for the upcoming concert, full details will be email out.
Ed - Rotary golf challenge 4th Sept, Ed is looking for two more golfers and Brian is seeking volunteers to help out during the tournament. He is seeking 5 more people.
Brian and Laurie gave an update on the district convention. While we all knew it was a success, there were still questions about the overall cost. Brian and Laurie were happy to share that all of the bills have been paid and The Rotary Club of Truro did not owe any money. In fact, the conference turned out to be such a success that they presented the club with a cheque for just over $14,000! Many thanks to our co-chairs, the committee and everyone who worked so hard to ensure the conference was a success.
Jim - Bollywood is coming! Tickets sales are going well, and we are hopeful that the event will be sold out again this year. Jim is seeking 4 volunteers for door, draw, etc.
Rob Christie addressed the club briefly to share that planning for the 2018-2019 District Convention is underway. He thanked Brian and Laurie for their participation in planning process. The convention will be held at the wellness Centre in Pictou county and include several excursions around the area. Rob asked Truro members to consider working with his planning team. Recognizing youth will be a theme throughout the conventions and Rob would like youth involved at every stage. Rob also plans to issue a challenge to the District to have every club sponsor a student in Adventures in Citizenship.
President's Report: Ted thanks those who participated in the Polio Swim Challenge. Ted also shared that the club will sponsor a park bench in the new Civic Square.
Speaker: Kirsty Mallay - Adventures in Citizenship report.
Kirsty is a Past President of CEC Interact Club and is headed to Concordia in the fall to study medicine. Kirsty participated in "Meet the Adventure" on arrival in Ottawa which provided a great opportunity for her to get to know people. There were several presentations and excursions that stood out for her during the trip including a presentation on “How to Win at Life”, an emotional visit to the Canadian War Museum and a performance by a traditional French band (she learned to do-si-do!). On Monday the group headed to house of Commons and Kirsty took the opportunity sit in Bill Casey's seat in his absence. She met House Speaker, Nova Scotia's Geoff Reagan and learned about his duties. Meeting Elizabeth May and hearing her discuss women in politics was very exciting for Kirsty. Kirsty shared that she was even able to best her teacher with current politics news based on what she had learned. Other highlights included a presentation on “True Facts of Terrorism”, visiting the First Nations Center, and a dance party (complete with a wardrobe malfunction which caused her retirement from crowd surfing). Attending the Citizenship Ceremony and hearing the stories of others left Kirsty feeling proud of being a Canadian and she was excited to receive her reaffirmed citizenship.
Ken thanked Kirsty for her engaging presentation, but expressed some concern that following her to the podium was like trying to top a Jimmy Fallon monologue. Thanks Kirsty!
