May 30th bulletin 
 

Opening/Chair: Chairperson Laurie opened with O'Canada and the moment of reflection. She introduced herself and talked about her farm and Rotary family
 
Happy Mug: Lydia,Kirk, Kevin, Christine, Ed MacDonald, Sharon, Brian and Catherine. There were lots of Happy Rotarians.  
  • Catherine brought back a banner from her old club in Lethbridge Alberta (Urban Spirit) and presented it to President Kevin.
  • Sharon reported she had attended the meeting of the St. John's After Hours club and presented them with our Club banner. The first banner they had ever gotten AND  it was their first anniversary.
Attendance: 55% before makes were added in.
 
Fun Fines: Al fined all those who didn't know what Catherine had found while picking up garbage on Saturday. Most paid.. even those who had been there.  It was a wallet full of cards she turned over to the police.
 
Visitors/Guests: Robin Crowe Marketing manager from Truro Raceway was a welcome guest.
 
She outlined a program called Cheering for Charity. They have a driver race on behalf of a specific charity for a month.  She estimated the charity will make around the $1000 or more plus get a lot of exposure. The Rotary Club of Truro has the opportunity to be the sponsor charity for the month of July. We would need some participation and events and make it as fun as possible as club. She thought we might get the biggest donation because it's the biggest month for racing. The club executive would decide.

50/50: Alana came late and bought the last ticket  but found the joker and the got 22 dollars. 
 
Member Health:
  • Lloyd report that David MacNaughton had had a slight stroke. He  seems to be improving and is accepting calls. 
  • Judy is improving after her surgery and hopes to be at the next meeting. 
  • Jim reported that Barb's mother was improving enough from her recent illness that she might be leaving hospital. 
Committee Reports: Lydia reported on the approval of our global grant and outlined all the good things it will do. 
 
Secretaries's Report: No report 
 
President's Report:
  • President Kevin thanked all those who participated the highway clean up.
  • He circulated a photo of the CEC Interact club with Laurie.  There are currently 60 members.
  • Rotary Club of Port Hawkesbury is hosting a golf tournament on June 4th.  Location is Dundee.  Please let Richard Bowness know if you plan to attend.
  • He reported that Camp Tignish is using our Bethel Trust money we donated to install heat pumps
  • He asked that reports from committees be forwarded to him for the AGM on June 27th.
  • The Rotary Club of Pictou is holding their annual President's Turnover night on June 24th at Pictou Lodge, 6 p.m. for 7 p.m.. It would be nice to have a group go over.  Cost is $55 per person.
  • He reported on the work of the Bursary committee. The Club is awarding the 2016 Bursaries at CEC, North Colchester and South Colchester high schools.  No applicant from the Christian Academy, and the application from Ecole Acadienne was incomplete.  He asked for volunteers to attend the graduations and make the presentations - - SCA June 28 at 7 p.m.; NCA June 27th at 7 p.m.; CEC June 28, 7:30 p.m. at the RECC.  All presenters are asked to be there at last 30 minutes early.
  •  Asked for chairs and speakers for our summer meeting schedule in July and August. The meeting dates are July 11 with Alana as Chair, and July 25 with Alana as Chair.  Aug 8 with Alain as Chair, and Aug. 22 with Kirk. When asked if the meetings could be breakfast meeting there was a quick no from some members.
  • June Directors meeting at Kevin and Sharon Quinlan's, 6 Meadowvale Drive....  2.6 kms from Wilson's Gas Bar on Queen Street/Salmon River Road.
President Kevin presented Brian Matthews with his Paul Harris +2 pin in recognition of his contributions to the Rotary Foundation.
 
The dates from the summer social were discussed and would be announced.
 
Speaker: Speaker was unable to attend and would be rescheduled.

Stories
Clubs Clean up
Thanks to 10 Rotarians plus 10 more friends, family, and Interact Club members from CEC for volunteering their Saturday morning to cleaning up the Robie Street / 102 Interchange and traffic circle. The ditches were slippery and wet but no-one complained as 43 bags of plastic, fast-food wrappers, cups, styrofoam and various other debris were collected.
 
We're good for another year.
 
Rotary Matches Interact Club Fundraising
The Rotary Club of Truro offered to match the fundraising efforts of the local interact Club.  In the picture Club lesion Laurie Sandeson presents a $500 cheque to the CEC Interact Club.   Great Work!
Tom Savary Inducted as Member of Club
 
Tom Savary is the newest member of the Rotary Club of Truro. Inducted on May 16th at the club's regular meeting Tom was sponsored by Rotarian Jim Gould (Left).  DG Jim Goit helped with the induction ceremony.
 
Tom moved back to Nova Scotia six years ago to make Truro  his home. He has worked for CIBC for 21 years in various roles in both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, returning to Truro, as Manager of Commercial Banking and Agriculture.   He and is partner Alison have bought a farm house to renovate in Beaver Brook which he says has been both fun and frustrating at times.  
 
Tom has two grown children, Rachel, who is studying for her doctorate of Animal Science at the University of Saskatchewan, and son Nathan, who is working in Moncton.  Alison has three children, Daniel who is travelling the world, Claire, attending CEC in Truro, and Samuel who attends CCJH. Samuel is a Gymnast with the Truro Spartans.   Welcome Tom and Alison!
 
Club Makes Major Donation to IWK
 
The Rotary Club of Truro welcomed representatives of the IWK who wanted to thank the club in person for a $50,000 donation for the new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. This donation, part of the Bethel Trust proceeds, will help the new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit to be among the best in the world. In the picture above Club President, Kevin Quinlan presents the cheque to Keely Wallace - IWK Foundation Philanthropy Team

Successful District Conference
 
An incredibly successful District Conference was held on the weekend of May 12-15.  Approximately 258 Rotarians and friends from all over the District were in attendance and feedback has been that the conference was second to none.  The program was informative and inspirational and the entertainment was "OFF THE HOOK".  A summary of the evaluation survey is found on the District Website.  Read the comments at the end.
 
Congratulations to the host team and especially to Co-chairs Laurie Sandeson and Brian Matthews who received the District Governor's Citation from DG Jim for Outstanding Service to the District.
