Speaker:
Kevin Armstrong is a member of the Rotary Club of Sydney Sunrise and former Assistant Governor for Cape Breton. The Rotary Clubs in the Sydney area have cooperated for the past two years on hosting a local Ribfest. Kevin is co-chair of the event and he outlined for the members present, his experience with this fundraiser.
The Ribfest is a major community event in the Sydney areas and he explained how it started and what they had learned from the past two years experience. They have underestimated the attendance for both years and have nearly run out of food. Community support was great.
In his presentation he explained how the event was organized. Rotary depends on the support and cooperation with other organizations such as Kinsman as well as of friends and community volunteers from outside Rotary. They have about 40 sponsors including the Membertou First Nation.
The committee starts to plan about 10 months ahead of the 3 day event. There are several revenue streams including raffles, donations and sponsorships. The majority for funds go to Hospice in Sydney but there is also other revenues for the clubs for other purposes. There are lots of jobs for everyone. He said that Rotary netted about $40,000 for Hospice from the event.
Kevin stated that cooperation and promotion are both important elements for success with Ribfest.
Christine thanked Kevin on behalf of the club.
Attendance: 62%
Closing: Tom closed the meeting at 1:00 pm.
