JDRF Atlantic : Shane Crawford shared with the club how his son Jack was diagnosed Type 1 Diabetic in July 2013. Since then he and his family have been committed to JDRF in raising funds and awareness about this disease, in hopes that one day Jack will see a cure.  JDRF’s research is committed to improving the lives of every person with T1D and to curing this disease. JDRF's research goals are realized by the projects being supported in three basic areas: Cure, Treat, Prevent, The $10,000 donation that the Rotary Club of Truro recently made will go toward clinical trials of a new encapsulation device. The small device would be implanted under the skin and would serve to regulate insulin production and allow patients to lead normal lives. Currently, Shane's son Jack needs to check his levels 10-15 times a day and it can be very difficult to manage. Jack is very hopeful that he will one day receive on of these new devices.

Early Years Program : Trish McKinnon and Mindy Leblanc spoke to the club about the Early Years program, funded by a number of community partners (NS Health Authority, CCRSB, Maggie's Place, NS Public Library, Centre for Active Living, Municipal Gov.) which targets 4 year olds who are heading to school and addresses common readiness skills. The project is already underway in Hilden and the principal of that school is "over the moon" with the results. A $9000 donation by the Rotary Club of Truro will help the program to expend to Bible Hill Central Elementary and help ensure the youth in our community have the skills they need to be successful in school.

Easter Seals  : John MacDonald and Henk van Leeuwen were on hand to accept a $25,000 donation which will support much needed capital improvements at Camp Tidnish. Easter Seals is the umbrella organization responsible for the operation of Camp Tidnish which offers a barrier free camping experience for children with a variety of disabilities. Henk shared that use of the facility is up and continuing to increase, but the infrastructure is in need of improvement. Henk thanked the Rotary Club of Truro which has been a long time supporter of Camp Tidnish through several improvements to facilities as well as an ongoing sponsorship of a large number of campers each year.
