July 11, 2016 Bulletin
Opening/Chair: Lydia was chair for day and asked Laurie to lead the group in O'Canada followed by the moment of personal reflection.
Lydia gave a very brief introduction of herself reminding members she had spend 17 years working on overseas project with Canadian Executive Service Organization (CESO). There were three things she had learned she wanted to share.
- When you are a country on a project take the time to talk to the locals and ask them what their needs are. It may be something basic you take for granted.
- Basic Nutrition is key. In a lot of placed lack of nutrition is the root of may ailments from mental illness to joint problems.
- If a person is ill, don't ask the cause. Not only is it a private matter but it is likely something that is not treatable in that environment.

- There were 40 outstanding invoices for LAST YEAR'S yearbook that needed to be cleaned up. He circulated a list of and asked members to help by visiting these business and dropping off the invoices. These were all good clients and may have just overlooked the invoices sent out in March. The potential postal strike may mean a more direct approach in needed to get these cleaned up.
- Judy Nicholson reminded everyone that the summer social was coming up this Saturday at the Ed MacDonald's Garagemahal, 57 Grant's Lane, Shortt's Lake.. Please sign up on the electronic notice that has been sent out and will be going out again. It is a pot luck event and food assignment is by last name. Bring your own Lawnchair.
- Ken Maclean reported on the first two evenings of Cheering for Charity at Truro Raceway. Les, Alana, Kevin, Brian, Sharon and Christine and all been there to help and everyone had a great time. Les is apparently the one to ask for betting advice.

President's Report: President Ted welcomed our speaker Craig.
He reported briefly on a few of the highlights of the first Director's meeting that had been held on July 7th.
- He reported that the there was still work going on to fully integrate the Christmas Index into the Club. Legal issues were still outstanding.
- The Directors had voted to provide $500 of support toward a Global Grant Project authored by the Rotary Club of New Minas Sunrise for an ambassadorial Scholar.
- He provided a few details of the club budget for the 2016-17 year saying that because of reduced fundraising, the club would not be able to support community projects at the same rate as previous years. A lot depended on the Yearbook project and the recovery of the outstanding yearbook invoices. The budget is available to members on the Club website. (requires login)
- The Directors had decided to do away with the weekly fun fines as some saw it as a barrier to membership.
- The Directors have decided to increase the cost of the Happy Mug from $1.00 to $2.00.
- Minutes of this (all Directors meetings back to 1997-98) are available to members on the Club website (login required)
Craig began his presentation by thanking the Rotary Club of Truro for their recent generous contribution to the Society as well as for all the support that we have provided since the start of the organization.
He explained that this was his first presentation to Rotary but that he was familiar with us because of all the Rotarians who volunteer for Hospice as well. He took the opportunity to thank Rotarian Judy Nicholson and the Best Western Glengarry for the on going support of the Society and to promote an upcoming dance fundraiser at the Best Western Glengarry on September 24th.
Craig outlined the services of Hospice, what it was and why it was needed. And the need is growing. The Colchester East Hants Hospice Society was very fortunate to have the support of the community, 25 to 50 active volunteers and local Government but more will be needed. As the "Silver Tsunami" hits many of us will be seeking the sort of programs and services offered by Hospice.
He also stated that there is a great working relationship with the Palliative care unit of the hospital and that the integrated model of Palliative care and Hospice that we have here is listed internationally as a model to emulate.
In concluding his remarks Craig again thanked the club for their on going support but indicated that for hospice to be truly sustainable in the region the senior levels of government would have to become more involved.
Rotatian Sharon Corcoran (and a very active Hospice volunteer) thanked the speaker.
